The challenges facing members of the Fire Service throughout Ireland will be discussed at the Chief Fire Officer Association (CFOA) Conference 2010, details of which were announced today.
Mr. Michael Finneran T.D. Minister for State at the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, will officially open the two-day conference, which takes place at the Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa, Ennis Road, Meelick, County Clare, on Wednesday 5th May and Thursday 6th May 2010.
The theme of the conference is “Innovation and the Fire Service - Success in a Changing Environment”.
Among the topics to be discussed will be the emergency response of local authorities to the recent flooding events, the role of the Fire Service in Emergency Medical Services, encouraging behavioural change in people to improve fire safety, the progression of the new National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management, and the challenges facing the Emergency Services across the European Union.
Keynote speaker during the two-day conference will be Alan Merry, New Zealand's Fire Services Principal Advisor on Fire Risk Management, who will set the scene on international change and innovation.
According to Michael Raftery, CFOA Chairperson and Galway Chief Fire Officer: “The conference will focus on the changing environment facing the Fire Service, including the changes to the economy and the changing roles for the Service in recent times. It also will provide a forum for those employed in the public sector and those engaged in private practice to come together to discuss topical issues.”
“The conference will feature expert speakers within the Emergency Services Sector and the Fire Technology/Industry from Ireland, UK, EU and New Zealand who with their experience, knowledge and wisdom in different aspects of the Fire Service will attempt to provide innovative thoughts and ideas about how the service can achieve such success in a changing environment”, added Mr. Raftery.
The annual showcase event for Ireland’s Fire and Emergency Services sector also will feature a Fire Industry and Technology Exhibition that includes 52 internal trade stands and 17 outdoor exhibits.
According to Mr. Raftery: “This exhibition presents an ideal opportunity for representatives from the manufacturing and trade sector involved in supplying emergency products to meet, network and exchange information with representatives and colleagues from the private and public sector in a convivial and workmanlike environment.”
The CFOA comprises the Chief Fire Officers of all Local Authorities in Ireland. The Association is also a member of the Federation of European Fire officers Associations and attends their twice yearly meetings.
