Operation Transformation Walk To Take Place In Castletroy

People of all ages are being encouraged to put on their walking shoes and participate in the Operation Transformation Walk along the Castletroy Slí na Sláinte walking route at midday this Saturday, 14 January.

County Limerick and Limerick City Sports Partnerships, in conjunction with The Irish Sports Council, will host the event which is one of 31 similar walks taking place throughout the country.    Corbally native and participant in RTE’s Television’s Operation Transformation show, Kayleigh Yeoman will also take part in the walk.

Phelim Macken, coordinator of the County Sports Partnership said the Castletroy Slí na Sláinte route is 7km in length and suitable for all levels of walkers, shorter routes can be taken along the way.

“We would encourage members of the public, young and old alike, to participate in Saturday’s event which will take place along a clearly marked and safe walking route. Walkers can sign up to take part in a 4km or 8km walk”, he said.

The Slí na Sláinte, meaning “Path to Health”, is a unique initiative of the Irish Heart Foundation designed to encourage people to get active and get walking on routes marked out at 1 km intervals. It uses signage at kilometre intervals on established walking routes to help walkers identify the distance they walk.  The Castletroy Slí na Sláinte route was officially opened in September 2008.

According to Mr. Macken: “Slí na Sláinte is a simple innovative scheme developed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to walk for leisure and good health. It is vitally important that every effort is made to encourage people to participate in physical activity.”

“Getting active makes such a big difference to your heart and overall health, helping to reduce stress, ease back pain and reduce the risk of heart disease. Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity, such as brisk walking, five days a week”, he concluded.
