Burren Festivals Unite For Summer 2012

Six popular festivals and sporting events in north Clare that were previously promoted individually were today united under one banner with the launch of Burren Festivals 2012.

Organisers estimate that the events will lead to a combined footfall of 14,000 and 6,300 bed nights in the region, worth approximately €2.5million to the local economy during May and June.

The six events include the Brehon Law Weekend (May Bank Holiday Weekend), Burren in Bloom (May), Burren Marathon Challenge (May 26th), Féile an tSamhraidh (June Bank Holiday Weekend), Ballyvaughan Races (June 17th) and An Post Tour de Burren (June 23rd).

The initiative is being led by Ballyvaughan Development. Group Chairperson Patrick O’Donoghue said: “The launch of Burren Festivals 2012 shows how groups can work together and combine their individual strengths to make all these festivals a massive success. We hope to build upon this for the future.”

The Clare Tourism Forum said the combined marketing of six separate events would generate significant benefits for North Clare and the County as a whole.

Speaking at the launch of Burren Festivals 2012 at Aillwee Cave and Burren Bird of Prey Centre in Ballyvaughan, Forum Chair Barbara Faulkner stated: “The collaborative approach and cross promotion efforts being adopted by the organisers of each of these events will ensure that individual events will benefit while the region itself is promoted to a wider audience.”

Ms. Faulkner noted that the lead set by Burren Festival participants should encourage other event organisers throughout the region to group together to help promote their respective communities and regions.

“In this day and age of increased competition from other tourism markets, there is a real danger that Ireland’s tourism and hospitality businesses may not succeed unless a concerted and united approach is adopted. The Clare Tourism Forum promotes such an approach and congratulates Ballyvaughan Development for developing this initiative, in conjunction with the event organisers,” she added.

According to John Sweeney of Clare Sports Partnership: “We are delighted to once again be involved in two of the festivals in Ballyvaughan this year, namely the Burren Marathon Challenge and the An Post Tour de Burren. We have seen these two events grow over the last 4 years. Both events are now noted nationally as being ranked highly in their disciplines. Locally, they have played a major role in helping to increase physical activity levels to the recommended 30 minutes a day. "

Five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault will make his first appearance in an Irish cycling event when he participates in the Tour de Conamara, details of which were announced today.

The Tour is the Irish leg of a new international cycling sportive taking place during May 2012. Other mass participation cycling events will be held in Ayrshire (Scotland), Pembrokeshire (Wales) and Brittany (France).

The Irish event, the first mass cycling event to take place in the Connemara region, will be held on Sunday May 27th in Clifden with 140km and 80km route options.

“The Tour de Conamara event has already attracted registrations from France, UK and the USA, providing a significant economic boost for Clifden and the wider Connemara region”, explained organiser of the Celtic Series and Tour de Conamara, Mr. Pádraic Quinn.

Mr. Quinn, a former international cyclist and TG4 cycling commentator stated: “The idea is to provide cyclists of all abilities with a different cycling sportive experience for 2012 and the first of its kind in Galway against the spectacular backdrop of Connemara. The Tour de Conamara will be one of four events in four Celtic nations and the organisers were looking for a route that reflected unique cycling routes in the host country.”

“The routes in the 140km and 80km events, which are chosen to accommodate and test all levels of cyclists, will avoid busy roads and operate on a rolling road closure so riders can enjoy the scenery in a more secure setting. On Saturday 26th May, a Family Cycle will take place in Clifden providing everyone with an opportunity to hop on their bike over the weekend”, added Mr. Quinn.

He continued: ‘Working with the events from the other Celtic regions made us realise how attractive Ireland has become as a cycling destination. The Bretons are planning to travel here in big numbers and the most famous cycling Breton of all, Bernard Hinault will attract a large French following due to his iconic status in the area.  The Mayor of the region, a very high political office in France, is also travelling to the west of Ireland to take part in the cycle.”

Hinault, nicknamed Le Blaireau (the Badger) is one of only five cyclists to have won all three Grand Tours and the only cyclist to have won each more than once. He won the Tour de France in ’78, ’79, ’81, ’82 and ’85. He came second in ’84 and ‘86 and won 28 stages, of which 13 were individual time trials.

The Tour de Conamara is supported by Fáilte Ireland and Forum Connemara Ltd., with sponsorship being provided by Aer Arann, Galway Water, PowerBar, Velotec, Foinse, and Le Comptoir Irlandais.

Participants who register for the Connemara event before April 10th will also receive a limited edition event jacket. Event information and registration is available on www.celticseries.ie.

Grant Aid Scheme For Horticulture Development

Minister for Defence and Clare Fianna Fail T.D., Mr. Tony Killeen has welcomed the launch by the Department of Agriculture of the 2011 Grant Aid Scheme for the Development of the Commercial Horticulture Sector.

The closing date for receipt of applications to the fourth round of the Scheme is Friday 18th February 2011 and only investments commenced after the issue of letters of approval will be eligible for aid.

This aid, which is set at 40% (50% in the case of young farmers) of total eligible capital investment, will fund projects in commercial horticulture undertaken during 2011. The scheme covers all horticultural sectors – protected crops, nursery crops, field vegetables, soft fruit, apples, beekeeping and, mushrooms.

Minister Killeen explained that the scheme is aimed at assisting growers to efficiently produce high quality products to meet the increasing demands of a very competitive market.

“It will also contribute to increasing Irish fruit and vegetable consumption towards the recommended target of 5-a-day as part of a healthy diet”, he said.

The Minister continued: “There remains a continual need for the industry to adapt its production methods, both to minimise environmental effects and to benefit from adopting newer technologies. This scheme includes provision for increasing the uptake of green technologies, including water recycling, generating energy from waste and innovations based on plant production”.

Meanwhile, Minister Killeen has welcomed the launch by Bord Bia of their annual Performance and Prospects Report, indicating an 11 per cent increase, to €7.88 billion, in the value of Irish food and drink exports in 2010.

“I warmly welcome the strong performance of Irish food and drink exports in 2010 and the encouraging prospects for food, drink and horticulture in 2011. I am confident that the food, drink and horticulture sector will continue to perform strongly in 2011 with increased demand for dairy products, the maintenance in beef export values and good prospects for beverages, seafood and horticulture”, he concluded.

Aran Swim Raises Funds For Temple Street Children’s Hospital

A group of swimmers who braved the high seas of the Atlantic during August met today with a representative from Temple Street Children's University Hospital to officially hand over the fruits of their labour.

The 13 swimmers of the Swim Aran group swam from Inisheer beach to Doolin Pier on August 21st last, under the watchful eye of 18 kayakers, Doolin Coastguard and other support boats.

Participants included Seamus Mulcahy (Limerick native living in Ennis), Aoife Cosgrove (Tuam native living in Ennis), Colm Fitzgerald (Shannon), Linda Clarke (Dublin), Pat Finn, Adrian Cosgrove, Niall O’Farrell, Kevin O’Farrell, Cian O’Sullivan, Mikey Milane and Donal McCarthy (all Ennis), and Paul Kearney and Deirdre Kearney (both Limerick).

Aisling Andrews, Fundraising Coordinator from Temple Street accepted the cheque for 28,184 euro which was raised by a number of events and collections in the run up to the almost 7-mile swim, saying that the Swim Aran Team and all involved should be very proud of their achievement.

Aisling explained how Temple Street had recently been appointed as the National Centre for paediatric brain and spinal surgery for all children in Ireland up to the age of six, and the money donated by the Swim Aran team will go towards funding the specialised operating theatre  and hi-tech equipment for this unit.

“Already hundreds of children have been treated in this unit, and they then recuperate in an environment which is geared exclusively towards supporting children, and their families.  The equipment purchased from these funds will be used for the benefit of patients over and over again”, added Ms. Andrews.

Mayor of Clare Councillor Christy Curtin congratulated the swimmers on raising the funds which he said would go towards the further development of a “vitally important facility”.

“I also wish to acknowledge the generosity of members of the public who showed their support to the swimmers and helped ensure that this fundraising swim raised much needed funds for this year’s chosen charity, Temple Street Children’s Hospital”, the Mayor added.

US Green Card Application Period Ends November 3

Minister for Defence and Clare T.D., Mr. Tony Killeen has reminded prospective Irish emigrants that the period for US Green Card application period ends on Wednesday 3 November at 5pm.

The diversity visa lottery program gives winning entrants an opportunity to apply for a permanent visa to live and work in the US. The program makes 50,000 visas available annually to applicants who meet eligibility requirements. In the 2008 and 2009 there were 167 and 201 successful Irish applications respectively.

Minister Killeen said he supported the advice issued by immigrant support groups in the United States for anyone thinking of coming to the US to avail of legal avenues that will allow them to live and work legally there.

He continued: “As my colleague Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Martin said on his recent visit to the USA, prospective Irish emigrants should not come to America without their papers in order. We must at all costs avoid a new generation of illegals in the United States.”

Meanwhile, Minister Killeen urged people to be extra vigilant about companies and websites that charge a fee for processing the application and especially those that guarantee results.

He added: “Not only are immigrants unnecessarily giving their money and their personal information to private companies, but often no application is actually filed for them and they loose their opportunity to submit an entry”.

“All applications go through the one official route which is a US Department of State website at www.dvlottery.state.gov . Applications can only be made online via this site and there is no charge to submit an application”, explained the Minister.

Green Light For Crusheen Rail Stop

Minister for Defence and Clare T.D. Tony Killeen has announced that funds totalling approximately €1.5m have been allocated for the provision of a rail stop at Crusheen, which is located along the route of the recently opened Western Rail Corridor.

A number of works will have to be undertaken before the stop is operational. These include alignment works, the development of a new platform, construction of public parking facilities, signal works, and the installation of ticketing machines and public lighting.

According to Minister Killeen: “Iarnród Eireann’s Chief Executive Dick Fearn informed me that the company is very pleased with the level of passengers now utilising the recently opened section of railway between Limerick and Galway. He also said he believes the provision of a rail stop at Crusheen will contribute to the success of the overall service.”

This week’s funding announcement arises out of a meeting facilitated by Minister Killeen on September 6th. The meeting was also attended by Dick Fearn, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann; Michael O'Doherty, Project Spokesperson for Crusheen Rail Stop Campaign; Councillor Michael Kelly; Sean Keehan from Crusheen; a local developer and various other community representatives; and senior officials from the Department of Transport and the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Commenting on the background to today’s announcement, Minister Killeen said: “Realignment and new level works were undertaken at Crusheen during the construction phase of the Western Rail Corridor ahead of its reopening in March of this year. Earlier this year a local developer offered to make land available for a car park and railway station in Crusheen. This followed on foot of Iarnród Eireann receiving substantial interest in the possibility of a service from Crusheen. Considerable information also was collated by the local community in Crusheen, with considerable assistance from Clare County Council, regarding the potential future use of the proposed rail stop.

“This information along with undertakings relating to the provision of adequate car parking facilities at the platform in Crusheen were submitted to Iarnród Éireann. In light of the credible case for the provision of a rail stop in Crusheen, I requested the company to review the potential for such a development. As a result Iarnród Eireann submitted an application for funding to develop the station in late April. I am delighted that funding has now been secured for the delivery of this vital infrastructure project”, explained Minister Killeen.

He continued: “I have made numerous representations down through the years on behalf of the people of Crusheen to numerous Ministers and Departments as well as Iarnród Eireann. I have always believed that there was a strong case for the provision of a rail stop in Crusheen. The benefits of such development for both the North Clare area and the overall operational success of the Limerick to Galway rail service are significant. Two stops are presently being provided for between Gort and Athenry and none on the very long stretch of railway between Ennis to Gort. Crusheen is an ideal location for people coming from Ruan, Corofin, Tubber, Boston and elsewhere in North Clare as well as Tulla and other areas of East Clare”.

Minister Killeen concluded by acknowledging the efforts of the local community, including Councillor Michael Kelly, and Clare County Council in pressing the case for the rail stop.

Deadline Extended For Isover Ireland Building Awards

The deadline for submitting entries to the Isover Energy Efficiency Awards (EEA) has been extended until October 11th.

The inaugural awards scheme is being targeted at building professionals including architects, engineers, builders and developers across Ireland who have built new and renovated buildings that have been built with a very low energy demand.

A €10,000 prize will be presented to the overall winner of the Irish finals who will go forward to represent Ireland at a European Awards ceremony in Madrid in May 2011. The winner will also be profiled in the internationally-distributed Isover ‘Best Of’ book.

The awards scheme acknowledges the considerable shift within the Irish construction industry towards energy efficient building design, explained Mr. Kieran Holohan of ISOVER Ireland.

Mr. Holohan explained that the awards will celebrate Ireland’s most energy efficient renovation and new construction projects, both in the residential and non-residential sectors.

He added: “The ISOVER Energy Efficiency Awards reflect two environmental issues that are at the very heart of our core objectives - protection of the environment in the face of climate change, and enhancing the quality of and physical comfort in the buildings where we work and live.”

Mr. Holohan pointed out that much of Ireland’s existing building stock continues to consume a considerable amount of energy for heating with significant emissions of greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels.

“New building regulations coupled with a change in consumer behaviour and attitudes has led to a significant increase in the number of renovation and construction projects embracing energy efficient design.

“Not only will this new awards scheme honour those who have excelled in the energy efficient building sector but it will also allow scheme participants to exchange and share knowledge and experience in the field. ISOVER Ireland is confident that this will help to highlight the importance of improving the energy performance of our buildings and, subsequently, the inhabitants' quality of life”, concluded Mr. Holohan.

The adjudication panel includes leading Irish experts in the field of green design and construction, namely Tomas O Leary, Passive House Academy Ireland; Jeff Colley, Editor of Construct Ireland and winner of the 2010 Green Leader Award; Jay Stuart RIBA, Sustainable Design Consultant; and Zdenka Debartoli, International Market Manager Building, ISOVER.

Projects entered in the competition must be fully completed by December 2010 and not more than 5 years old. Closing date for entries is Monday October 11th 2010. The Irish awards ceremony will take place in December 2010.

Irish Homeowners Could Save Thousands Of Euro With Passive Housing

People planning to build a new home could save themselves thousands of euro each year by developing a passive house.

That is according to the Passive House Association of Ireland (PHAI), a low energy design initiative comprising passive house designers and contractors. The Association, which was officially launched in Dublin this week, will operate in tandem with the ‘International Passive House Association’.

Passive house is the term used for a house which has no heating system installed, but whose occupants, rely on maximum heat gains from sunlight, high insulation and draught-proofing levels, for a comfortable and healthy lifestyle.

“Passive houses are leading the way toward a carbon-neutral future by producing more energy than they use and radically reducing fuel bills and C02 emissions”, explained PHAI Chairman Martin Murray.

He continued: “The Government's Building Regulations have lead to some improvements in energy efficiency in Ireland, but remain a minimum guide. Those in the construction industry and prospective homeowners, however, need to take the lead and invest in proper design. By doing so their homes will be energy efficient, therefore, helping to reduce their energy bills along with reducing overall CO2 emissions. The infrastructure required to implement such designs is available and affordable in Ireland, despite claims to the contrary from elements within the Irish Construction Industry.”

Mr. Murray added: “The idea of passive house construction is not new, as there are now over 30,000 examples built world-wide. These include many other types of building besides houses, such as, office-blocks, apartment-blocks, schools, and just recently a Tesco supermarket in Tramore, County Waterford. In each case, the building occupant has made considerable savings by not having to invest heavily in heating oil, gas or other fuel.”

He continued: “Extensive monitoring of these buildings is on-going and the results show that not only are the occupants saving money, but are, in general, hugely satisfied with the product which they have invested in.”

“The role of the association will be to develop the Passive House concept of construction within Ireland and attune it to the technologies and market practices prevalent within the country. The experience in other countries is that, such low energy initiatives only flourish, where National Associations take on a leadership role of research, promotion and education”, he concluded.

Individual and Corporate Membership of the Association is available and it is hoped that the Association will be of benefit to the construction industry as a whole.

The PHAI was launched during the annual SEAI/RIAI sponsored 'See the Light Conference' in Croke Park yesterday, 9th September 2010.

New Renewable Energy Project Launched In West Of Ireland

The Minister for Defence Mr Tony Killeen TD today launched the Regional Approaches to Stimulation Local Renewable Energy Solutions Project (RASLRES) on behalf of the Western Development Commission.

The launch took place in the Bunratty Castle Hotel in Clare.

RASLRES is a €3m multi-national European bio-energy project funded by the Northern Periphery Programme which seeks to build awareness of opportunities for rural communities to produce and supply locally produced biomass (wood, seaweed and energy crops) to towns and cities.

Speaking at the launch Minister Killeen said “This exciting project aims to provide business development support to rural biomass communities and will aid development of biomass supply chains through direct business and community engagement. The project has the potential to bring nearly €1 million funding to Ireland’s Western Region over its three year lifetime and support over 50 companies. While some of the other countries are pursuing various other renewable energy areas under this Programme, the WDC is focusing on the wood energy sector.”

The RASLRES project will address current barriers to market growth including low levels of market confidence, insufficient market information and limited technical and business skills, and actively tackle the issues at regional and local level.

The Minister said: “If the Western Region develops a vibrant wood energy sector, it will help stimulate rural development and create jobs. WDC research has shown that the West could develop an indigenous, sustainable, renewable energy resource delivering 11% of the region’s heat needs by 2020. Such growth will require over 470,000 tonnes of wood fuel per year and would also mean an additional €15 million per annum to the economy and create up to 900 additional jobs in rural areas. Importantly, it has the potential to provide €1.7 million each year to the West’s farming sector.”

The jobs created would be spread across the entire supply chain and result in additional activity to the benefit of private forest owners, forest contractors, haulage companies, plumbers, engineers, electrical companies etc.

”The spin off from the additional employment has the potential not only to revitalise many areas that are dealing with the fallout of the current economic climate but also on the green side, our carbon footprint will improve as the estimated CO2 emissions saved annually would equate to taking over 92,000 cars off our roads”, concluded Minister Killeen.

RASLRES is an international partnership which includes:
- Western Development Commission – Ireland
- Action Renewables – Northern Ireland, UK
- Environmental Research Institute, North Highland College – Scotland
- Municipality of Norsjo – Sweden
- Oceanrainforest Ltd – Faroe Islands
- VTT, Technical Research Centre – Finland

The Mayor of Clare today called on the people of Doolin and surrounding areas to show their support for a group of charity swimmers participating in an open water swim from The Aran Islands to Doolin this weekend.

13 swimmers, triathletes and life guards have undertaken months of intensive training ahead of Saturday’s Aran Swim, which will raise funds for a new national Neuro-Surgery Unit for Temple Street Children's University Hospital.

Swimmers will be supported by Doolin Coast Guard and a number of kayaks and boats on the day, all volunteering to support the worthy cause. The event is expected to start from Inisheer at 1.45pm with swimmers arriving at Doolin pier from 4.30 onwards, depending on the weather and sea conditions.

Commenting on the swim from Inisheer Pier to Doolin Pier, Mayor Christy Curtin said: “I would like to wish the participants of this charity event the very best of luck this coming Saturday as they prepare to swim across a difficult stretch of water. I would urge members of the public to show their support to the swimmers and ensure that this fundraising swim raises much needed funds for this year’s chosen charity, Temple Street Children’s Hospital.”

Participants include Seamus Mulcahy (Limerick native living in Ennis), Aoife Cosgrove (Tuam native living in Ennis), Colm Fitzgerald (Shannon), Linda Clarke (Dublin), Pat Finn, Adrian Cosgrove, Niall O’Farrell, Kevin O’Farrell, Cian O’Sullivan, Mikey Milane and Donal McCarthy (all Ennis), and Paul Kearney and Deirdre Kearney (both Limerick).

Event participant Aoife Cosgrave commented: “Temple Street Children’s University Hospital provides care to sick or injured children from all over Ireland. The hospital prides itself on striving to provide only the very best standard of care available to every single child that passes through their doors. However, the hospitals dedicated team of carers highly relies on fundraising and the generosity of supporters nationwide to aid the hospital in strengthening its position at the forefront of paediatrics in Ireland. Currently the hospital is raising funds for a new Neurosurgery unit which will be heavily dependent on fundraising events held across the country.”

Ms. Cosgrave thanked the local community in Inisheer and Doolin for their support to date and added: “Both swimmers and support crew alike have been training and preparing for months for the swim, and recently testing out the swim site itself in conjunction with Doolin Coast Guard who will be present on the day and coordinating the event safety. The tired swimmers, volunteers and the Doolin Coast Guard who have kept the swimmers safe during the summer will then enjoy a night and barbeque in Hotel Doolin with live music. All are welcome.”

Mayor Of Clare Welcomes Aer Arann Announcement

Mayor of Clare Councillor Tony Mulcahy today said the future viability of Shannon Airport has been greatly enhanced by Aer Arann’s decision to announce new services from Shannon to four UK destinations today.

Mayor Mulcahy added that Aer Arann’s announcement was not just a vote of confidence in this airport, but also a vote of confidence in the Mid West Region.

“Up until recently Shannon was very much dependent on one airline to maintain its scheduled services. I have always believed that relying on one airline for a large proportion of traffic was potentially detrimental for the airport as you end up leaving yourself open to a complete collapse of business if that operator pulls out. Aer Arann’s arrival at Shannon, coupled with Delta’s resumption of transatlantic services heralds a new beginning for the airport. I think today’s announcement will inject massive confidence into the local economy at a time when it is most needed”, he stated.

The Mayor continued: “Shannon Airport undoubtedly experienced an immensely difficult opening four months to 2010 when it lost two thirds of Ryanair services in late March and then had to contend with numerous airspace closures brought on by the volcanic ash cloud. However, the airport’s fortunes have improved immensely in recent weeks with announcements from Delta and Continental that led to an expansion of the level and range of transatlantic services now available from here. Furthermore, Aer Lingus’s continued commitment to operating its transatlantic services and the immensely popular Heathrow route has consolidated Shannon’s ‘international airport’ status.”

Mayor Mulcahy acknowledged the efforts of Airport Director Martin Moroney and his staff in seeking a replacement airline for routes vacated by Ryanair in late March.

He continued: “With Kerry, Galway and Ireland West airports in such close proximity to Shannon it was imperative that as many of the services as possible be reinstated without delay. Furthermore, the airport has worked closely with transatlantic operators to ensure that the Mid West continues to be served with quality connectivity to and from the US, where many of the region’s multinationals originate. These scheduled services are complemented by the services being announced today and I am confident that additional new services will be announced before long.”

Commenting on the new routes, Mayor Mulcahy said: “As a frequent air traveller myself, I am delighted that my local airport can now offer an even greater range of destinations to which to fly to. The Bristol route will no doubt be popular with rugby fans and also tourists wishing the visit the beautiful West of England. Many people in this region have relatives living in Birmingham and the Midlands region so that route will be well utilised. Glasgow is the home of Celtic Football Club and in Shannon alone I know there are many soccer supporters who will look forward to using the new service. The Glasgow service will also provide an additional entry point into Scotland for people in the region as Ryanair already operate a service to Edinburgh.”

“Aer Arann’s announcement today is a very significant announcement for Shannon Airport, the local business and tourism sector, and the wider community across the region”, he concluded.
