The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark has announced a number of events marking Earth Science Week 2014, including a fieldtrip for university students examining climate change in the rocks of the Burren.
Earth Science Week was initiated in 1998 by the American Geosciences Institute which has been holding events in the third week of October ever since. Geological associations and institutes around the world now participate to promote awareness and education of all aspects of Earth Science.
Earth Science Week celebrations in the Geopark get underway this Sunday (19th October) starting with a free public guided walk for all ages along the coast of Fanore. The free, guided family walk along gets underway from Fanore carpark at 10am. The theme of the event will be the exploration of very ancient and more recent climate change and how it has affected the landscape of the Burren.
The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark is also hosting a climate change fieldtrip for third level students and a water tracing project for transition year students from Lisdoonvarna Secondary School, which is being supported by the Clare Caving Club, the Geological Survey of Ireland and Clare County Council.
Earth Science Week is promoted throughout Ireland by Earth Science Ireland, a voluntary organisation established in 2000 to increase the public understanding of Earth Science throughout the island of Ireland.
