Senator Tony Mulcahy, Fine Gael's Seanad spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, has confirmed the allocation of €191,278 to Clare County Council to enable the local authority to carry out works to social housing stock.
Senators Mulcahy said the finance can be used for adaptations and extensions to social houses to meet the needs of tenants with a disability or to address serious overcrowding.
He commented: "By improving people’s homes, this funding will directly improve the quality of a number of social housing units in Clare, to be identified by the local authority. These very important improvement works will directly benefit the people living in these homes and will serve as a sensible long term investment in Clare's social housing stock."
“As social housing residents age some require adaptations and extensions to their homes in order to continue to live independently. There will also be an upgrading of the energy efficiency of local authority homes. This is part of a three year national jobs stimulus programme that will see the energy efficiency of 25,000 of the poorest insulated local authority homes improved," added Senator Mulcahy.
“As part of the national programme of energy retrofitting social houses, there will be a particular focus on improving attic and wall insulation in homes which require it. This will result in improvements in the thermal efficiency of the homes and improved comfort levels all around. This will result in warmer homes, with reduced fuel bills this winter for many local authority tenants. The scheme will also support the creation of hundreds of jobs nationally in the green energy sector," he concluded.
