People Of Clare Urged To Get Active During National Recreation Week

The Clare Sports Partnership and Clare County Council are encouraging people across Clare to get out and participate in physical activity during the 3rd annual National Recreation Week, which takes place from October 29th to November 4th.
The purpose of the initiative, the theme of which is “Recreation For Life”, is to promote the importance of recreation for young people. This year, members of the public are being encouraged to use some of the many recreational facilities located throughout the County.

“Clare has an array of beautiful outdoor facilities that are accessible and ideal for physical activity. The importance of physical activity in our daily lives cannot be underestimated”, commented Mayor of Clare, Cllr Pat Daly.

Mayor Daly added: “Over the years, Clare County Council has been at the forefront of helping to develop these spaces with funding and support for such projects as playgrounds, blue flag beaches, amenity areas, woodland walks, looped walks and cycle paths. We are hoping that the people of Clare will put them to good use collectively during National Recreation Week 2012”.

National Recreation Week builds on the success of the first ever Clare Gets Active Day which was held on July 1st, where in spite of the inclement weather conditions, fifteen local communities organised a minimum of an hour of physical activity within their area at the same time on the same day. Activities on that day included Sports Blitzes, Walks, Cycles and family Sports Days using the facilities available within local communities. The initiative was coordinated by the Clare Sports Partnership, Clare County Council and the County Development Board.

Commenting on National Recreation Week, Catherine O’Hara, Community and Tourism, Clare County Council, said:  “Recreation is seen as including physical activity, sport, arts and crafts, music and dance, hobbies and pastimes.  It is important that our young people are encouraged to participate in positive recreational activities as such activity can be significant in terms of health, balanced lifestyle, and community development and integration”.

“So why not be a part of National Recreation Week 2012 with your friends, family or neighbour? We are urging people to check out the autumn colours in the local woods, go for a walk along one of our 8 blue flag beaches, or blow away those cobwebs along one of the many designated walking routes in the county. Considering that the Week takes place during the Mid-Term Break why not visit one or more of the 30 playgrounds around the county? Remember access to these facilities is free,” Ms. O’Hara added.

Members of the public are also advised to check out the special offers available for National Recreation Week 2012 in both Shannon Swimming & Leisure Centre (061 361841 www.shannonleisurecentre.ie) and Ennis Leisure Centre (065 6821604 www.clarecoco.ie ). The promotional offers provide supports to encourage people to take up active recreation in a supportive environment.

Meanwhile, National Recreational Week is this year encouraging people to consider becoming a Community Recreational Leader. Clare Sports Partnership is launching their Active Leadership training programme to support sustainable community-based physical activity and develop active recreational leaders as part of National Recreation week 2012. This training programme will take place on Tuesday 30th October and Tuesday 6th November from 6.30 – 9.30 pm in the Gaelscoil Primary School, Ennis. Anyone interested in this training programme please contact James Murrihy, Clare Sports Partnership at 065 6865434 or 087 9627696.
