Community Clean Ups Get Underway In Limerick

Limerick County Council, in conjunction with An Taisce, is inviting voluntary groups and individuals from across County Limerick to help clean up their communities this April by participating in the National Spring Clean campaign.

An Taisce’s National Spring Clean Ambassador and Model, Sarah McGovern launched this year’s campaign - themed “Working Together For Our Community”- by joining staff from the Local Authority’s Environment section to participate in a cleanup at Cois Luachra in Dooradoyle.

Participation in the 14th annual campaign is open to individuals, schools, businesses, and community groups such as TidyTowns committees, residents’ associations, development associations and sporting organisations.

Groups that register to participate are issued clean up kits containing valuable tips on how to hold a successful clean-up event, posters to advertise an event, plastic bags in which to collect litter and recyclable material, and tabards and gloves.

“Local communities throughout County Limerick have always supported the National Spring Clean campaign, and in doing so have helped to improve the environment in which they live in,” explained Gerry Behan, Director of Services, Environment & Emergency Services, Limerick County Council.

Mr. Behan added: “Most participants see National Spring Clean as a positive and fun way of coming together with their neighbours to ensure their road, estate, park, parish, village or community is cleaner.  Along with An Taisce, we are urging people who have never been involved in Spring Clean before to make a start this year.”

Persons or groups interested in registering for the campaign can do so directly via the National Spring Clean website at www.nationalspringclean.org or by calling the National Spring Clean hotline on (01) 4002219/4002220.  Further information also is available from the Environment Section of Limerick County Council on 061-496264.

National Spring Clean Month is sponsored by Coca-Cola, Wrigley’s, Repak Ltd, An Taisce, and the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.
