Council Lends Helping Hand To Local Businesses

Limerick County Council has announced the establishment of Business Support Clinics for local businesses aimed at assisting new and existing businesses locally.

Businesses across the County are being afforded an opportunity to meet with representatives of the local authority’s Business Support Unit (BSU), including officials from the Planning, Finance, Environment, Roads and Water Services sections of the Council to discuss their business plans and proposals. The monthly clinic will pull together expertise from a number of sections to ensure joined-up service, support and advice for clients seeking business support. The meetings are scheduled to take place on the first Thursday of each month.

Today’s announcement coincided with the launch of a business guide aimed at attracting business to County Limerick. The guide, entitled ‘Look to Limerick – We Have What You Need’, has been developed by the BSU. Information leaflets on local Authority charges, and business information services available in libraries throughout County Limerick have also been launched.

Speaking after the launch of the Cllr. Richard Butler, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council said the new guide showcases the wide range of facilities and supports that are available to anyone starting and expanding a business in County Limerick.

“The Council, along with other development agencies across the region, is committed to supporting economic activity at local level. The future competitiveness of County Limerick depends on the entrepreneurial skills of local SMEs, who must be supported.  I would encourage new and existing businesses in County Limerick to review the new handbook as well as to consider attending one of the One Stop Shops”, he added.

Anthony Coleman, Limerick Business Support Unit said “Limerick County Council, through the Business Support Unit, will continue to play a leading role in supporting economic development at local level through its capital and current budget, local economic planning through the County Enterprise Board and County Development Board structures, the economic provision of goods and services, and the provision of a range of capital infrastructure in the water services, roads and community infrastructure”.

The BSU, guided by research completed by Masters Students from the Kemmy Business School, at the University of Limerick is also in the process of establishing an online business directory aimed at supporting local businesses.  The Limerick Business Directory, which is expected to be completed and made available online in the coming weeks, will feature contact details of and information on commercial, industrial and professional companies that are active in County Limerick.

The Business Support Unit works closely with the County Enterprise Board and County Development Board structures, local development companies, Enterprise Ireland, I.D.A., Shannon Development, FÁS, Third Level Institutions and Chambers of Commerce.
