The Business Support Unit (BSU) at Limerick County Council, guided by research completed by Masters Students from the Kemmy Business School, at the University of Limerick has announced the establishment of an online business directory aimed at supporting local businesses.
The Limerick Business Directory, which is expected to be completed and made available online by June, will feature contact details of and information on commercial, industrial and professional companies that are active in the County.
The BSU and students from the Masters in International Entrepreneurship Management from the Kemmy Business School are undertaking a research survey of local businesses to identify the key issues that local businesses face, and identify the key areas where support, advice and assistance is required.
Director of Services Josephine Cotter Coughlan, speaking on behalf of the BSU, described the proposed Business Directory as a method of ensuring that featured companies will benefit from increased exposure for their goods, products and services.
She added: “Newly released figures suggest that there has been a 3.9pc increase in the number of new companies formed in the first six weeks of 2011, compared to the same period last year. The BSU, which acts as point of contact within Limerick County Council to facilitate and encourage economic and business development, is committed to capitalising on this renewed growth and ensuring that local businesses are made aware of and offered the necessary support and advice.”
Commenting on the survey of local businesses, Ms. Cotter Coughlan said: “The BSU is working with the Kemmy Business School to provide a business consulting report on how the Business Support Unit can support entrepreneurs and business people in County Limerick. The BSU will be asking local businesses on the most effective way of marketing this support to local business owners. We will also be gaining an insight into the perception of Limerick County Council amongst business people and entrepreneurs in addressing the issues that face them in business, as well as investigating the level of interest people would have in attending workshops and mentoring clinics on local authority issues.”
Ms. Yvonne Costin of the Kemmy Business School added: “The development of a definitive database of all businesses operating in the county will not only serve to highlight the wealth of entrepreneurial and business activity taking place in the County but will also showcase the products and services on offer to consumers in Limerick and the wider region. The directory will also provide a useful determining tool for anyone wishing to invest in a new business in Limerick."
The Business Support Unit was established in 2009 and works closely with the County Enterprise Board and County Development Board structures, local development companies, Enterprise Ireland, I.D.A., Shannon Development, FÁS, Third Level Institutions and Chambers of Commerce.
