Events marking National Tree Week will take place across Ireland, including Co Clare, from 6-12 March 2011.
The theme this year is ‘The Year of the Forest – Celebrating Forests for People’, which is in keeping with the United Nations designation of 2011 as ‘The International Year of Forests’.
Joan Tarmey, Environmental Awareness Officer, Clare County Council said: “As part of National Tree Week, the Environment Section is organising ‘A walk in the woods for the Family”’ at Dromore Woods on Sunday, 6th March at 2.30pm. So if you fancy getting out into the fresh air and learning a bit more about our native trees, book your free place now by phoning us on 6846281. We will also be giving away ten free copies of the publication “Buds of the Banner” - a guide to native trees and shrubs for Clare”.
Clare County Council & the Tree Council of Ireland are providing native tree species to many community groups around the county who have expressed an interest in planting native trees in public areas as part of National Tree Week. Coillte is also sponsoring trees for distribution through the local authority.
Cllr Christy Curtin commented “I am urging the people of Clare to play their part in National Tree Week which runs from 6-12 March 2011. Trees play many important roles in our environment – they act as a carbon sink for greenhouse gases and help to clean the air. They also enhance our villages, towns and our homes by providing places of refuge and beauty. It’s a good time of year to get the wellies on and get planting those trees”.
Over thirty community groups across the county have already requested trees from the Council and they will be planting them in public areas. If your community group would like to receive some native trees for planting in public areas, we are urging you to contact staff in the Environment Section by Thursday, 3 March.
National Tree Week is an opportune chance for Tree Council member organisations, local authorities, tidy towns and community groups, schools, families and many others all over Ireland to do something positive for their local landscape. By setting up events for National Tree Week within your community or organisation, you can inspire people, young and old, to get out into the fresh air and together plant thousands of trees. It is great fun too - even on a wet blustery day, the thrill of going out and getting your hands dirty, something many of us don't do often enough, is really rewarding and satisfying whether you are planting one tree or a hundred.
