Councillor Tony Mulcahy has been added to the Fine Gael ticket to contest the General Election in the Clare constituency.
The Mayor of Shannon and former Mayor of Clare joins sitting T.D.s Pat Breen and Joe Carey on the Fine Gael ticket.
Councillor Mulcahy thanked the Fine Gael party for approving his candidacy and he promised to run “an honest, open election campaign that will outline my clear objectives and polices for getting County Clare and the country back.”
“The forthcoming General Election is one of the most important elections to ever take place in this country, in terms of the issues being debated by those bidding to represent the people of Clare. I would urge voters to put their party allegiances aside and select candidates that they feel can best represent their family, community and county at national level. My allegiances are to the people of Clare, their interests and the welfare of the younger generation who should not be forced to grow up in an environment ruled by a fear of the unknown. Very clear steps need to be taken to get this country back on track and to restore some of the national spirit that has been eroded in recent years.
“There is a growing sentiment among voters that their vote will not count as Ireland’s fate has already been sealed. However, politics and our shared future are at a crossroads. My colleagues within Fine Gael and I are ready to take up the mantle on the electorate’s behalf and with their help steer Ireland away from the tried, tested and much aligned policies of the existing administration. I want to help restore confidence in this country’s capacity to reinvent itself and address the many challenges facing our economy and more importantly, our society.
“During my recent term as Mayor of Clare I was fortunate to engage with communities right across Clare and I am indeed proud to say that many improvements to community life were delivered during my term. I want to work on these achievements and with the backing of the people of this county I will seek to bring the concerns of the people of Clare directly to the seat of Government as opposed to the people of Clare being laden with policies designed to rectify the mistakes of others. Furthermore, if elected I will work with representatives of all political parties in the Midwest to ensure that this region’s voice is heard and listened to at the highest level.
“The job of a local T.D. should be to serve those who tasked him or her with representing them, as opposed to following an agenda and polices that neglect the concerns of the very people they are elected to represent. I live and work in the local community, I love my county and I am committed to finally providing a strong and unflinching voice for the people of Clare to have their concerns and issues addressed at national level”, concluded Councillor Mulcahy.
Tony Mulcahy was elected a Fine Gael Councillor in 1994 to Shannon Town Council and was subsequently returned to this Council in 1999, 2004 and 2009, topping the poll in the Shannon Electoral Area. He was first elected to Clare County Council in 1999, and re-elected in 2004 and 2009.
Councillor Mulcahy contested the last General Election in 2007 securing 3,408 or 6% of first preference votes. He was among four Fine Gael candidates to contest the race for the Clare constituency’s four Dáil seats.
Tony and his wife Carmel live in Shannon and have 4 children, ranging in age from 18 to 30.
