Mayor of Shannon and former Mayor of Clare Councillor Tony Mulcahy has confirmed he is actively seeking a nomination from the Fine Gael party to contest the next General Election.
Councillor Mulcahy contested the last General Election in 2007 securing 3,408 or 6% of first preference votes. He was among four Fine Gael candidates to contest the race for the Clare constituency’s four Dáil seats.
Mayor Mulcahy said he was seeking to bring a fresh voice to the Dáil representing the interests and concerns of the people of County Clare.
Mayor Mulcahy said: “Following careful consideration and consultation with my family and closest friends I have decided to put my name forward to contest the next election on behalf of the people of County Clare. I want to bring my wealth of experience of dealing with local people on local issues to a platform where I can deliver real change for those I represent.”
He pointed to his long standing representation at local level, direct involvement with community and voluntary groups and organisations, and strong business background in the Co Clare period over a 35-year period.
“County Clare and Ireland are at a crossroads now in terms of delivering key decisions and policies that will help get the local and national economy back on track. By contesting this election I am conscious of the huge economic and social concerns of the people of Clare and am committed to playing my part in helping to deliver for a brighter future for all.”
Tony Mulcahy was elected a Fine Gael Councillor in 1994 to Shannon Town Council and was subsequently returned to this Council in 1999, 2004 and 2009, topping the poll in the Shannon Electoral Area. He was first elected to Clare County Council in 1999, and re-elected in 2004 and 2009.
Tony and his wife Carmel live in Shannon and have 4 children, ranging in age from 18 to 30.
