The medieval town of Kilmallock is to provide the atmospheric backdrop to SoulScapes, a festival series jointly organised by Limerick County Council and Friars Gate Theatre Kilmallock.
The festival will be held during November and will feature contributions from some of Ireland’s most thoughtful and respected social thinkers including Patrick Hederman, Abbott of Glenstal Abbey; Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy, an Irish Sister of Charity and the founder of Focus Ireland; and well-known speaker, writer, and broadcaster Christy Kenneally.
A number of other events celebrating Irish culture and traditions will take place throughout the week.
According to Joan MacKernan County Arts Officer: “As November is traditionally a month for reflection and remembrance, we thought it an opportune month to bed the series as the series theme is reflection, remembrance and importantly in the times we are in, celebration of the Irish spirit. On each Wednesday during November we will host four rich evenings for the mind and spirit that will inspire uplift and entertain through word, music, dance and song.”
“As we want to make this series as accessible as possible tickets are only €5 per night” continued Ms. MacKernan. “We would encourage people to attend the whole series and enjoy the full gamut of experiences that is on offer over the four evenings which commence at 8pm.”
Caoimhe Reidy, Manager of Friars Gate Theatre explained that the genesis of SoulScapes has come out of the difficult and challenging times Ireland now finds itself in.
She added: “The festival programme features some of Ireland’s most interesting and thoughtful speakers including Patrick Hederman, Abbott of Glenstal, Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy and Christy Kenneally. Other guests, all who have forged a national and sometimes international reputation include singer Noirín Ní Riain, storyteller Eddie Lenihan and sean nós dancer Seosamh O’Neachtain.”
SoulScapes opens on November 3rd in Friars Gate Theatre Kilmallock with an evening entitled Music, Mysticism and Religious Imagination featuring Patrick Hederman OSB and acclaimed singer Noirín Ní Riain. On the second evening November 10th Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy will give her thoughts on Ireland: A Vision for the Future.
Enchantment Myths and Dancing Stories is the title of the third Wednesday and will feature the highly regarded storyteller Eddie Lenihan and the mesmerising sean nós dancing of Seosamh O’Neachtain. Meanwhile, author, broadcaster and inspiring speaker Christy Kennelly will speak on ‘Coping with Loss in a Time of Change’ on Wednesday November 24th.
Tickets can be booked at Friars Gate Theatre 063 98727. Full information is available on www.friarsgate.ie and www.lcc.ie.
