A series of events promoting social inclusion will be held throughout County Clare as part National Social Inclusion and Active Citizenship Week 2010, which takes place from Sunday 17th to Saturday 23rd October 2010.
Events include the launch of a Social Inclusion Strategy for County Clare, social inclusion workshops, art exhibitions, the launch of a multi-cultural story time initiative by Clare Library Service, workshops on disability equality training, and the launch of a homebound book service to the elderly in Clare.
The week is part of the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, which aims to raise awareness about poverty and social exclusion in Europe.
According to Catherine O’Hara, Community and Enterprise, Clare County Council: “This week provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase and highlight some projects and initiatives that take place throughout the year which have a strong social inclusion focus. These events will highlight how County Clare is embracing social inclusion and in doing so is helping to ensure greater opportunity, equality and justice for all members of the local community.”
“Clare County Council is working with other agencies and groups throughout the county to organise a calendar of events for the week. We would also encourage other local groups and organisations to run their own events to highlight the work that they are doing to promote social inclusion and active citizenship. One of the main features of the upcoming National Social Inclusion and Active Citizenship Week 2010 will be the launch of the Clare County Development Board Social Inclusion Strategy for County Clare at the Civic Room in Ennis Town Council on Monday 18th at 12.45pm.
The Clare Active Citizenship network hosts “Have a Say: Claiming Our Future”, a civil society forum which will include a keynote address by Dr Chris McInerney of the Tipperary Institute, Information Stands, and a range of speakers on the issue of social inclusion. The event will be held on Monday 18th from 10.15am to 12.15pm in the Civic Room of Ennis Town Council at Waterpark House, Drumbiggle, Ennis. All are welcome.
The Clare Library Service will launch a Homebound Book Service to the Elderly at St Joseph’s Elderly Care Facility in Ennis on Wednesday 20th.
Clare Library Service will also launch a multi-cultural story time initiative at De Valera Library in Ennis on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th. For details contact Library services at 065-6846266.
Clare Volunteer Centre is holding workshops aimed at providing “Disability Equality Training” to assist voluntary organisations in creating volunteer opportunities for people with disabilities and promoting an inclusive and diverse volunteer workforce. To find out more email info@volunteerclare.ie.
As part of the arts office ongoing programme a number of projects and initiatives take place around the county which reflect the arts office’s ongoing commitment to social inclusion.
These projects include a drama workshop hosted by the Clare Youth Theatre, workshops at Raheen Day Care Centre, an art workshop at St Joseph’s Hospital, and workshops under Arts & Disability Programme. Elsewhere the Orchard Art Group will present a community art exhibition called “Emerging Styles”, in association with the Clare County Arts Office. at the Art Gallery in Kilrush throughout Tuesday 19th.
Meanwhile, John Sweeney of the Clare Sports Partnership will be highlighting the week’s events as well as the importance of recreation and active participation in sporting activities during two radio interviews on Clare FM’s Morning Focus programme on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th.
