ESB Moneypoint workers angry over picket

Angry workers at the ESB power station in Moneypoint are considering crossing the picket line this morning after claiming strikers who have prevented them from entering the plant do not work there.

Three outside companies with about 30 electrical workers employed between them are contracted at the west Clare facility, reports The Irish Independent. Over 300 people are employed by the ESB at Moneypoint and it is estimated that about 100 have refused to cross the picket line so far.

Management and operational staff have continued to work as normal and production has not been disrupted at the plant. However, those workers who arrived for duty, but declined to cross the picket, are now reconsidering their position. "It would be one thing if the contract staff here were picketing the plant -- we would then have no problem showing our support for them," one worker said.

Meanwhile, talks aimed at resolving the electricians' strike have convened at the Labour Relations Commission. The TEEU has said it will not be lifting its pickets ahead of today's negotiations.
