Northern Trust Jobs A “Shot In The Arm” For Mid-West Economy

The Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council has described today’s announcement by Northern Trust of 400 new jobs as a “shot in the arm” for the Mid-West economy.
Councillor Jerome Scanlan was reacting to the news that Northern Trust is to expand its Limerick operation by creating up to 400 new jobs over the next five years.

The Cathaoirleach said that the wider region had been handed a “significant boost” by the decision of the largest personal trust bank in the United States and the employer of thousands of people worldwide to choose Limerick as the location for further investment. He added that the news was particularly significant in light of the large number of people displaced from work in the financial services sector in recent years.

Councillor Scanlan continued: “The future economic growth of Limerick and the entire Mid-West Region depends on the continued investments of companies such as Northern Trust. Not only is the company’s investment a vote of confidence in the Region but also it sends out a message to the local, national and international business community that Limerick and surrounding counties offer multinational firms real opportunities for expansion.”

Councillor Scanlan noted that the principal factors for attracting multinational investment are already in place.

He explained: “Shannon Airport with its links to the UK and North America offers internationally trading companies with quality connectivity. This connectivity is complemented by the development of a high-quality road network linking the west and east coast of Ireland. The University of Limerick and the Limerick Institute of Technology are wonderful sources for highly educated graduates, while they also R&D for many multi-national companies already located here. Furthermore, the availability of high-bandwidth broadband enables companies to conduct business with international markets. Northern Trust has identified this potential and has responded in a way that will send a positive message to other indigenous and multinational companies.”
