Clare To Host National Carers Week Events

Caring for Carers Ireland will draw attention to the massive contribution of hundreds of full-time family carers in County Clare by hosting a week-long programme of specially organised events during the 6th Annual Carer’s Week from 15-22 June.

Caring for Carers Clare in partnership with Clare County Library, the Clare Volunteer Centre, Clare Sports Partnership and the Health Service Executive Health Promotion Services in Clare, is co-ordinating the events around Clare specifically for Family Carers.

Events include a Health & Wellbeing seminar at Glór, a lecture on Herbal Medicine at the Daycare Centre in Ennistymon, an advice session on Osteoporosis & Nutrition at Regina House in Kilrush, a Laughter Workshop in Ennis, a display of entries for the Schools Carers Art Competition at Ennis Library, and a series of Mid Summers Walks at various locations throughout the County.

“The purpose of National Carers Week is to celebrate family carers and the vital role they play in looking after someone with an illness or disability,” explained Brigid Barron, Innovation and Programme Manager, Caring for Carers Ireland.

She continued: “Family Carers are usually immediate relatives, who provide very high levels of care, at home, for children and adults with severe disabilities, frail older people and people who are terminally ill. In total there are 161,000 family carers in Ireland, with over 40,000 classed as full-time carers. There are approximately 4,500 carers based in County Clare.”

Susan Hogan, Development and Training Officer, Caring for Carers Ireland added: “Full-time family carers provide an average of 110 hours of care per week and this work often is carried out without recognition. National Carers Week is an opportunity to recognise the valuable contribution to society made by hundreds of Family carers in Clare”, Ms Barron added.

“We would ask that anyone interested in attending any of the events contact us to register their interest,” Ms. Hogan concluded.

National Carers Week, now in its 6th year, is co-ordinated by nine leading Irish organisations that support family carers, including Caring for Carers Ireland, The Alzheimer Society, The Disability Federation of Ireland, Headway, and The Irish Hospice Foundation.
