The 2010 Clare Ultimate Golf Challenge concluded in Doonbeg yesterday when a fourball comprising members of golf clubs throughout the Midwest claimed the top prize.

The inaugural competition, proceeds from which go towards the Clare Tourism Forum’s 2011 marketing campaign, saw almost 150 golfers play all ten golf courses in the county during the last three months.  The eight teams of four with the best aggregate score qualified for the final, which was played at Doonbeg Golf Club.

The participating clubs were Lahinch, Doonbeg, Dromoland, East Clare, Ennis, Woodstock, Shannon, Kilrush, Kilkee and Spanish Point.

The winning team included team leader Des O’Brien (Kilrush GC), Sean McGuirk (Limerick GC), Bill Hanley (Charleville GC) and Brendan O'Keeffe (Ballykisteen GC), who won the final with a score of 88 points.  Joe Russell of Doonbeg Golf Resort and Maureen Cleary of the Clare Tourism Forum presented the winning team with their Waterford Crystal presentation prizes.

Congratulating the overall winners, Rebecca Brew, Chair of the Clare Tourism Forum said: “It was wonderful to have had so many golf clubs throughout Clare and surrounding counties represented in this competition.  The standard of golfing also was high and contributed to what has been a hugely successful first year for the Challenge.  Plans are already in place to host the Challenge again in 2011.”

Ms. Brew continued: “The Clare Tourism Forum is very grateful to the Golf Clubs which hosted the competition, without whose support this Challenge would not have been possible.  All proceeds raised will help to ensure the continuation of the successful and effective marketing and promotional activities by the Clare Tourism Forum during 2011.”
