Three County Limerick communities are busily preparing for the judging stage of Cooperation Ireland’s seventh annual Pride of Place Competition, which takes place later this month.
Limerick County Council has selected community groups in Glin, Broadford and Bruff to participate in the All-Ireland competition, which aims to recognise and celebrate the vital contributions that community groups make to society. Judging for “Pride of Place 2009” will take place in County Limerick on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st July, while the awards will be presented this November. The County will once again be hoping to achieve national recognition in a competition that last year saw Cappamore being named one of the principal winners.
According to Cllr. David Naughton, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council: “The performance of Limerick’s participants in previous years is evidence of the depth and breadth of voluntary activity underway in communities across the county. Limerick County Council is pleased to have worked closely with this year’s entrants, and wishes them the best of luck in achieving national recognition for their respective communities.”
“Ahead of the judging stage of the competition, County Limerick’s three participating communities are busily preparing itineraries and presentations, outlining achievements and pride initiatives. Judging day is a special occasion and an opportunity for the people of Glin, Bruff-Grange-Meanus and Broadford to show pride in their respective areas by supporting organised events”, added Cllr Naughton.
On the morning of July 20th, Bruff-Grange-Meanus Community Council (Category 4 – Population 1000-2000) will be showcasing the Community, Sporting and Cultural facilities of Bruff including the recently developed Youth Café and Cultural Centre. Later that day, Broadford Development Association (Category 2 – Population 200-500) will present the Daycare Centre and Community Crèche amongst other facilities.
Meanwhile, on the afternoon of July 21st Glin Development Association’s (Category 3 – Population 500-1000) presentation will have a maritime theme featuring a recently installed footbridge over the Corbry River, children’s playground (currently in development) and Glin pier.
The winners in each competition category will receive an exclusive crystal decorative memento, along with a cheque for €2,000. Runners up will receive a framed certificate and a cheque for €500.00, while the recipients of special awards receive a crystal memento.
“County Limerick’s success in the competition, to date, is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when the Local Authority and the local community work together”, explained Ms. Josephine Cotter Coughlan, Director of Services.
Commenting on the benefits of taking part in Pride of Place, Ms. Cotter Coughlan stated: “This competition focuses on local communities, both north and south of the border, coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about their area. Groups have the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and learn from others and further promote their activities. There is no doubt that local communities that have participated in the past have benefited greatly from their experiences. It has provided them with an excellent opportunity to highlight the elements of their areas that they have civic pride in, and gave them a platform to showcase the work they are doing on a continual basis.”
“Limerick County Council is confident that this year’s nominated projects best represent County Limerick and we look forward to achieving success again in this year’s competition, following on from Cappamore Development Association’s achievement in 2008”, she concluded.
Pride of Place, first piloted in the summer of 2003, came from the Local Authority All-Island Steering Forum - a forum that encourages strategic, sustainable approaches to cross border co-operation
