Cattle killed by lightning strike as thunderstorms batter Clare

Eight cattle have been killed by lightning in a field at Ballina, Killaloe, during a freak thunderstorm.

The six heifers and two calves (left) were ready for the abattoir this week and weighed between 630kgs and 650kgs, judging by similar cattle on another farm which were weighed last week. The owner, Pat Stritch of Ryninch told the Limerick Leader he had seen the cattle the previous evening, but when he went to check on them on Friday afternoon, he found eight of them dead under a large tree on a hillside overlooking Lough Derg.

Thunderstorms have been reported across parts of West Clare today as the East of the country continues to suffer from the brunt of the bad weather. The below image, provided by Met Eireann, shows one of the storms moving along the Clare coast at 2.30pm today.
