Wexford Garda faces prison sentence

A Wexford-based Garda faces up to five years for making a false statement that she had been attacked in a taxi on her way home from a night out, according to the Irish Independent.

The Garda, 25-year-old Niamh O'Connor with addresses in Rathnure in Enniscorthy and College Park Avenue, Ballinteer in Dublin, pleaded guilty this year to making the false statement at Donnybrook Garda Station in December 2007. She has since been suspended from duty.
Judge Katherine Delahunt will hand down sentence on the 9th of July.

City Mayors to be elected

Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Sligo will all elect mayors this evening following council meetings, reports RTE News.

Labour councillor Emer Costelloe is due to be elected Lord Mayor of Dublin City following a voting agreement between her party and Fine Gael. The two parties have a combined tally of 31 seats out of 52 on the council and will now rotate the office between them. The arrangement replaces a Fianna Fáil and Labour pact.

Fine Gael Councillor Dara Murphy is expected to be elected Lord Mayor of Cork. Cllr Murphy's election is being facilitated by a renewal of a pact between Fine Gael, Labour and Fianna Fáil.
Elsewhere, Fine Gael Councillor Kevin Kiely is likely to be elected Mayor of Limerick and the new Mayor of Sligo is Labour Councillor Jimmy McGarry.

PSNI investigate cash-in-transit heist

Police in the North are appealing for witnesses to the robbery of a cash-in-transit van in County Armagh this morning.

The driver of the van was approached by a man armed with a knife at a commercial premises on the Lurgan Road in Craigavon, reports breakingnews.ie. The man threatened the driver and then made off with the cash box in a light blue or grey car which was driven by a second man. The car was later found burnt out in the grounds of a nearby hospital.
Meanwhile, RTE News reports that a 26-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with an attempted raid on a cash-in-transit van in Dublin last month.
Keith Murtagh from Lower Sheriff Street in Dublin was one of two people shot by gardaí at Foxborough Road in Lucan on 15 May. The second man, 27-year-old Gareth Molloy, subsequently died from his injuries.Mr Murtagh was charged today with the attempted robbery of a security guard at Foxborough Road and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
