An elderly woman was airlifted to hospital last night after sustaining serious head injuries on Croagh Patrick in County Mayo.
The woman, who is in her 70s and from the US state of Colorado, suffered the injuries in a fall while walking on the mountain with her partner, reports breakingnews.ie. Rescuers found her partner uninjured but disorientated and walked him to safety.
The couple are receiving treatment at Mayo General Hospital.
Two fisherman have been rescued from the sea off the coast of County Mayo following the sinking of their vessel in the early hours of this morning.
The Malin Head Coastguard received a distress call from the Iona Isle shortly before 4am. According to breakingnews.ie, it scrambled the Ballyglass lifeboat, but another fishing vessel arrived at the scene first and took the men on board.
The lifeboat subsequently escorted that vessel back to Ballyglass pier.
Six people were arrested today in the area where energy giant Shell’s controversial new gas terminal is being developed, reports breakingnews.ie.
GardaĆ said the four men and two women were detained at around 4am for alleged public order offences at Glengad, Co Mayo.
They are being questioned at Belmullet Garda Station and are expected either to be charged or released this morning.
