Budding and established poets and writers are being invited to submit entries to the third annual Doolin Poetry & Short Story Competition 2015.
Hotel Doolin, in association with Tramp Press and Salmon Poetry, has announced details of the competition which for the first time includes a poetry contest having previously focused solely on short stories.
The prize fund for First Place in each both competitions is €1000, while the winners will also receive a publishing consultation with Tramp Press (short story) and Salmon Poetry (poetry).
The Poetry Competition will be judged by poet Jessie Lendennie, who is the founder and Managing Editor of Salmon Poetry. Jessie's prose poem Daughter was published in 1988, and reissued with new poems in 2001. More recently, she edited Salmon: A Journey in Poetry, 1981-1997 (Salmon, 1997) and Poetry: Reading it, Writing it, Publishing it (Salmon, 2009) and Dogs Singing: A Tribute Anthology (2010). Her poetry collection, 'Walking Here', appeared in 2011.
Éilís Ní Dhuibhne is this year's Short Story judge. The Dublin native's novels include The Dancers Dancing (Belfast, The Blackstaff Press, 1999/London Headline Review, 2001), which was shortlisted for the 2000 Orange Prize; and Dún an Airgid (Dublin, Cois Life, 2008), which was awarded the Oireachtas Prize for Novel in Irish. She has published five story collections, while her Irish language novel in Dúnmharú sa Daingean (Dublin, Clo Cois Life, 2000) was awarded the Oireachtas Prize for a Novel in Irish. She has also published a book of two plays and numerous children's books.
The competition entry fee is €10 and the closing date is Friday, 20 February, 2015 at 5pm. Shortlisted authors will be announced on Friday, 13 March, 2015 and the winners announced during the Doolin Writer’s Weekend in Doolin, County Clare from March 27-29, 2015.
The Weekend once again features workshops and readings by some of Ireland’s leading writers, including Booker Prize nominee Donal Ryan, Irish award-winning novelist and short-story writer Christine Dwyer Hickey, Dave Lordan, Anthony Glavin and Madeleine Darcy.
Event organiser and Doolin Hotel General Manager, Donal Minihane described the Doolin Poetry & Short Story Competition and Doolin Writer’s Weekend as "a great opportunity for aspiring writers as well as literary fans and published authors to get together and celebrate everything that is good about Irish Literature."
He continued: “Many artists and writers spent time in Doolin, including J.M. Synge, George Bernard Shaw, Dylan Thomas, Augustus John and Oliver St. John Gogarty. This spring we look forward to welcoming back some of Ireland’s best writers to North Clare.”
