With the Christmas parking scheme already in operation across Ennis, Clare County Council has announced details of its pedestrianisation initiative for the 2014 festive shopping period.
The Christmas Pedestrianisation Initiative has been finalised following a recent consultation between representatives of the Ennis business community and the Council with the key task of promoting shopping in Ennis over the Christmas and New Year period.
O’Connell Square and O’Connell Street from O’Connell Square to its junction with Station Road will be closed to vehicular traffic from 12.00 noon until 6.00 p.m. on the 20 December, 23 December and Christmas Eve (24 December 2014), and from 2 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. on Sunday 21st December 2014.
An alternative route will be in place for these dates with traffic from High Street and Abbey Street being diverted onto Bank Place. Ennis Chamber of Commerce has also confirmed that the car parks at Colaiste Muire and Holy Family School (€3.00 per day) will be available to the public during these days.
Meanwhile, a parking incentive scheme aimed at promoting Christmas and New Year shopping in Ennis came into force on Saturday.
Free parking is applicable to the town’s 759 off-street and 783 on-street public car parking spaces up to 12pm daily until 4th January, 2015. There is also free all-day parking at Cloughleigh car park.
Mayor of Ennis Councillor Johnny Flynn, who performed the officially switched on the Christmas lights in the town last Friday, said: "The Christmas Parking and Pedestrianisation Initiative in Ennis, coupled with other initiatives in the town that are being supported by Clare County Council, should make Ennis a very attractive shopping destination during the festive period. Ennis Chamber of Commerce is also promoting the Ennis Gold Gift Vouchers which make an ideal Christmas gift for a family member or loved one. The Vouchers also help to generate business in the town as well as sustain employment."
“I would encourage the staff of shops and business owners in the town to free up spaces close to the town centre for shoppers by using the alternatives provided. I am aware that the business community is very supportive of this initiative and I would like to acknowledge their commitment to developing an active involvement in the incentives for visitors and shoppers,” the Mayor added.
