New speed limit proposed for selected Clare Housing Estates

Clare County Council is inviting members of the public to play their part in identifying housing estates that could benefit from the introduction of new speed limits.

The call follows a Circular from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport requesting Local Authorities throughout Ireland to introduce new measures to reduce vehicle speeds in estates and residential areas.

The public consultation process is being welcomed by Cllr. John Crowe, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, who stated, "Road Safety is something we all play an important role in, so I would encourage everyone to make their voice heard by submitting their opinion on what estates should be included. It’s a worrying time but if we have learned anything over the last few years, it’s that we all have the power to make a big difference."

5 people have lost their lives on the roads in County Clare this year. Nationally, 13 children under the age of 14 died in the first eight months of 2014.

Cllr. Crowe continued: "Vulnerable road users such as the elderly and children are most at risk, along with cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists. We really need to redouble our efforts to try and reduce what was the worst year on our roads in seven years last year.

Clare Road Safety Officer, Barry Keating explained that every submission received during the ongoing public consultation process will be reviewed and considered.

"I would appeal to everyone to get involved and play your part in saving lives on our roads and making your estate a safer environment for all road users especially children," he added.

Submissions/Observations should be submitted to the Road Safety Officer, New Road, Ennis or email roads@clarecoco.ie  no later than Friday 7th November 2014.
