Neighbourhood Park and playground proposed for Mungret

Limerick City and County Council has announced plans to build a new neighbourhood park in Mungret.

The proposal also includes a playground featuring play equipment for both able bodied children and children with disabilities. The project is being backed by the 'Cycle 4 Sick Children' charity, whose aim is to help to raise funds and create awareness for children's disability and serious illness in Ireland.

A Part 8 planning application relating to the proposed development was lodged today and will remain on public display at City Hall in Merchants Quay and County Hall in Dooradoyle until 18th August 2014.

As part of the process a public information evening has also been organised by Limerick City and County Council for Tuesday 15th July 2014 from 5.30 pm to 7.30pm in Mungret Soccer Club.

"I would urge the public to attend the public information event and become involved in the process," commented Cllr. Kevin Sheahan, Cathaoirleach of Limerick City and County Council.

He added: "This is a very positive development for the people of Mungret and surrounding areas. Mungret continues to experience growth in terms of its population, which in turn must be matched by the provision of important infrastructure such as recreational amenities. By investing in our communities through the proposed development of a neighbourhood park and playground facilities, the Council is helping to promote social interaction and improve the health of the local community.”

Commenting on the proposed delivery of the new playground in Mungret, Liam Mulcahy of Cycle 4 Sick Children said: "One of our primary objectives is to create awareness around disability. Irrespective of ability we firmly believe that children have the fundamental right to experience the joy of being a child. We are delighted to be working in tandem with the Council to provide a playground that is open and accessible to all children. One that is unique in terms of its wonderful surroundings, its proximity to key regional facilities but also in terms of its ability to provide a genuine feeling of inclusion not just in words but in reality.”

Limerick City and County Council proposal includes the construction of a new neighbourhood park which will include playground facilities with ancillary parking in Mungret College.

Details of the proposal are on public display during office hours, Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) at the Economic Development and Planning Department, 7/8 Patrick St., Limerick, County Hall, Dooradoyle, and City Hall, Merchants Quay. The plans and particulars are also being made available for viewing on www.limerick.ie/council.
