Abbeyfeale and Kilmallock to show Pride of Place

The communities of Abbeyfeale and Kilmallock are busily preparing for the adjudication stage of 2014 IPB Pride of Place Competition, which takes place next week.

Run by Co-Operation Ireland in conjunction with local authorities north and south of the border, the annual all-island initiative aims to recognise and celebrate the vital contributions that communities make to society. 2014 represents the first year that Limerick City and County Council as a new local authority will have nominated groups to participate in the competition.

Radharc na Cille Residents Association in Kilmallock and Feale Life in Abbeyfeale will each have 2.5 hours to present and bring the judges through their projects next Monday (July 28th). Judges have already visited Limerick's two other participants in this year's competition, namely Kileely and the C-Well Project in Kings Island.

"Limerick City and County Council is delighted to have been able to nominate four quality projects for inclusion in this year's competition," commented Josephine Cotter Coughlan, Director of Service, Community, Leisure & Emergency Services.

She added: "The performance of Limerick's Pride of Place participants in previous years is evidence of the depth and breadth of voluntary activity underway in communities across the county. Judging day is a special occasion and represents an ideal opportunity for the people of Abbeyfeale and Kilmallock to show pride in their respective areas by supporting organised events."

Radharc na Cille Residents Association is participating in the 'Housing Estates' category, Feale Life is competing in the 'Eco Community Initiative' category, and Kileely and the C-Well Project have been entered into the 'Urban Neighbourhood' and 'Community Health Initiative (Physical Activity)' categories respectively.

Limerick’s most recent national success in Pride of Place came in 2013 when Castleview Estate Newcastle West, Limerick Youth Service and Moyross won 1st and 2nd in their respective categories beating off stiff competition from all over the country.

The 2014 IPB Pride of Place award ceremony will be held at Treacys West County Hotel, Ennis, Co. Clare, in November. For more see www.prideofplace.cooperationireland.org.
