Clare County Council, supported by Ennis Tidy Towns volunteers, will host a charity sale in Ennis this Friday (16 May 2014) to raise funds for a women's building project in Lima, Peru.
The Big Upcycle Pop-Up Sale at Áras Contae an Chláir coincides with the visit home from the South American country of Inagh native and Columban sister Mary Neylon who this year celebrates her Golden Jubilee in her profession.
Sr. Mary Neylon, affectionately known as Mary Ann, has worked for the last 25 years with the people in Lima to establish self-help groups for women to educate, support and sustain their local indigenous crafts including sewing and crochet traditional dressmaking. Sr. Neylon has set her sights on putting a permanent building in place to afford shelter, dignity and self-worth to the women of Huaycan City in Lima, and her fundraising target is €10,000.
Friday's fundraiser will feature a wide range of new and pre-loved clothing, bags, jewellery on sale for charity between 9am to 4pm. An Upcycling Clinic, hosted by an upcycling expert, will also be run between 12:30-2:30pm showing people how to breathe new life into their clothes and give them a real makeover. Three pieces of donated clothing have been upcycled in advance of the Clinic and will be on display at the event.
Meanwhile, a cake sale will be held at the crèche in Inagh this Saturday (17 May) after Mass and a second pop up sale will take place in the Falls Hotel in Ennistymon on 1st June with all monies raised going to the women's building project.
Cllr. Joe Arkins, Mayor of Clare, commented: "I want to congratulate Sr. Mary Ann on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee year as a Columban sister. Sr. Mary Ann, like so many Clare men and women before her, has made a valuable contribution to her adopted community."

I am encouraging people across the county to drop in for a browse at this unique event. You’ll get a chance to meet Sr. Mary Ann; you’ll no doubt find a few bargains; and the important thing is that all monies raised will go to a very worthy charity," added Mayor Arkins.
“It is fitting that the women of Huaycan City will benefit from this unique upcycling pop up sale, and I’m sure they could teach us a thing or two about sewing and upcycling," stated Joan Tarmey, Environmental Awareness Officer.
Ms. Tarmey continued: "People will not only have a chance to bag some bargains, but they will also be given the tools to give their own clothes a makeover. It is important to get people thinking about adding value to existing items rather than sending them for recycling. Prevention and reuse are key messages now, and this event provides people with a practical and creative outlet for this.”
Donated items for Friday's Big Upcycle Pop-Up Sale at Áras Contae an Chláir are being accepted until 5pm on Thursday 15 May. Clothes may be dropped in to Mary Mackey or Leonard McDonagh in the offices of Clare County Council at Aras Cntae an Chláir.
