A weekly programme of seven different guided walks, the first of its kind in Ireland, is being hosted in the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark this summer.
Experienced local Walking Guides from the Burren Ecotourism Network and the Burren Heritage Farmers have teamed up to enable visitors to North Clare to experience the biodiversity, geology, history, archaeology, food, culture and traditions of the Burren through walking the world famous landscape.
The daily Burren Walking Trips, which will be launched on Sunday (June 1st) and continue through the end of August, includes National Park walks, heritage walks, and coastal and cliff walks. Participants can also learn about foraging, ancient monuments of the Burren, “nature's compass” orienteering, farming folklore and the spirituality of the Burren, and are also given the opportunity meet with local farmers and sample the Burren's food produce.
"The selection of walks encourages visitors to explore the Burren at a slow pace and to take nothing from the landscape except precious memories. The guides are passionate about their countryside and knowledgeable about all aspects of the Burren," explained Tina O’Dwyer, Sustainable Tourism Co-ordinator, Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark.
Ms. O'Dwyer noted that the Burren Walking Trips feature a different walking schedule each day and has been specially designed so that visitors can create their own tailored walking break to suit their walking preference and the time available.
"All B&Bs, Guesthouses, Hostels and Hotels within the Ecotourism Network are involved, offering visitors the opportunity to choose were they stay and choose a walking programme to meet their individual needs whether it be a half day, a one day, a midweek or weekend break or a full week of tramping the rich diverse contours of the Burren countryside," Ms. O'Dwyer added.
Among the guides participating in the Burren Walking Trips is Marie McGauran, who lives in the heart of the Burren and has been operating Burren Experience Guided Walks for a number of years. Other guides include Deborah Evers (Burren Kitchen Garden), Tony Kirby (Heart of Burren Walks), Christy Sinclair (Adventure Burren), Oonagh O'Dwyer (Wild Kitchen), Pat Sweeney (Doolin Cliff Walk), Cathleen Connole (Burren Wine) and Farm Heritage Tours.
All daily programmes include transport from Lisdoonvarna with local pick-ups and a fully guided walking schedule. See the full programme on www.burrentrips.boghill.com.
