Oscar winner to shoot new film in Clare

An Academy Award winning documentary and commercial director will be in County Clare this St. Patrick’s Day to film her new film.
Cynthia Wade, who won the Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subject) at the 80th Academy Awards in 2008 and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2012, is currently producing a documentary on The Hutchins Consort.

The California ensemble featuring all eight instruments made famous by world renowned violinmaker Dr. Carleen Hutchins, will perform alongside Irish traditional musicians at The Roadside Tavern in Lisdoonvarna on St. Patrick’s Day.

Cynthia Wade’s film, “Second Fiddle,” documents Dr. Hutchins’ journey from life as a science teacher, mother and amateur violist to one as a prolific luthier and distinguished researcher into the acoustic properties of string instruments resulting in an innovative process called free-plate tuning. The Hutchins Consort performs on the eight scaled violins designed and built by Dr. Hutchins.

Peter Curtin of The Roadside Tavern commented: “We are delighted to be able to host a wonderful afternoon of St. Patrick’s Day musical entertainment by an ensemble known for its unique classical performances. We are also honoured to welcome Cynthia Wade to The Roadside Tavern and we look forward to the upcoming concert featuring in her new film. It will we a day of musical extravaganza as the musicians join with Irish traditional musicians for a day of craic at the Roadside Tavern.”

Cynthia Wade has won festival accolades all over the world, including at the Academy Awards, Primetime Emmys, Sundance Film Festival, Palm Springs, Aspen and the Hamptons, as well as film festival awards in Spain, Italy, Argentina and Belgium.
