Hundreds participate in Castletroy Operation Transformation walk

An event organised by Limerick Sports Partnership and the Irish Sports Council, in conjunction with RTE’s Operation Transformation programme, attracted hundreds of people from across Limerick at the weekend.

More than 560 people participated in Limerick Sports Partnership Operation Transformation walk in Castletroy, one of 42 locations around Ireland hosting such an event on Saturday.

This year’s 4-kilometre walk was hosted at Castletroy College with volunteers from Ms. Orla Knight’s Transition Year classes helping out on the day.

Irish Sports Council CEO John Treacy said:  “Our National Trails Unit has over 650 trails registered to help keep people active throughout the year. We encourage people that are not walking on a regular basis to do so and to invest in their own health and well-being.”

The walk marked the first event to be hosted by the newly established Limerick Sports Partnership (LSP) following the merger of Limerick City Sports Partnership and the County Limerick Local Sports Partnership on January 1st last.

The Sports Partnerships have been merged as part of the amalgamation process involving Limerick City and County Councils ahead of the Local and European Elections later this year.

LSP Sports Coordinator Phelim Macken confirmed the new organisation, which is based at the University of Limerick Sport Arena, will be officially launched during February along with the LSP’s programme of events for 2014.
