Limerick Smarter Travel brings bike parking to another level

The City Centre Multi-Storey Car Park on Anne Street/Thomas Street has become the first facility of its kind in Limerick to provide secure and convenient bike parking as part of an initiative being rolled out by Limerick Smarter Travel Office, in partnership with the City’s multi-storey car park owners.

22 bike parking spaces have been provided at the City Centre Multi-Storey Car Park which is fully lit and monitored by CCTV. The bike parking facility, which will be complemented by the provision of 10 bike lockers in January, is the first in a number of similar developments scheduled to be developed at multi-storey car parks across the City during 2014.

The Limerick Smarter Travel Office says the bike parking initiative enables cyclists to securely park their bicycles and is also aimed at complementing the proposed Public Bicycle Share Scheme for Limerick City Centre.

“This initiative seeks to encourage the public to consider using their bikes when going to work or shop in and around the city centre. By providing parking facilities we are making the city centre more accessible and at no cost to cyclists,” explained Pat O'Neill, Project Manager, Limerick Smarter Travel.

Mr. O’Neill noted that the Limerick Smarter Travel is continually looking at new and innovative ways of encouraging commuters and residents of Limerick City to consider alternative methods of transport.

He continued: “With the support of the local business community and in this case multi-storey car park owners, we are delighted to be able to proceed with our plan to provide additional safe, secure and convenient bike parking facilities throughout Limerick City Centre. Cycling is an environmentally-friendly means of public transport, and one that is healthy, relatively inexpensive, brings jobs closer to where people live, and ensures an improved quality of life in the City's natural and built environment.”

“The Limerick Smarter Travel Office looks forward to expanding the bike parking initiative during the coming year,” concluded Mr. O’Neill.

According to Car Park co-owner, Eva Clarke: “Having provided car parking for 25 years we are delighted to support the community in helping to revive our lovely city centre by providing safe, secure and free bicycle parking here in the heart of the city. We have toilet facilities and even free WIFI.”

“We have lots of fun ideas for 2014, we plan safe cycling courses for families as well as a Sunday cycle around the city and beyond the ‘Sunday Cycle’ will be a great success , young and old will be led by an experienced leader with interesting ever changing  routes. The city is a fun place to cycle and all are welcome,” added Ms. Clarke.

The City Centre Multi-Storey Car Park is open Mon-Thu (8.00am-7.30pm), Fri (8.00am-9.00pm), Sat (8.00am-7.00pm) and Sun (11.00am-6.30pm).
