Limerick Performance in Sport Award winners announced

A Limerick cyclist who last month was selected to compete for Tour De France winning Team Sky and the 2013 Limerick Senior Camogie Champions have been named as the latest winners of the Performance in Sport Award.

Sponsored by Limerick-based first aid and medical device specialists Fleming Medical in conjunction with Limerick Sports Partnerships, the Performance in Sport Award scheme was launched in early 2013 to recognise the valuable contribution made by sporting clubs and organisations to community life throughout Limerick.

October Award winner Autumn Collins was selected to ride for Team Sky after achieving several notable results against leading U16 and Senior Women’s cyclists.  The Adamstown Cycling Club member and Knockaderry native was one of only 20 U16 girls competing on the UK track cycling circuit throughout the summer to be selected for the “Future Stars” series.  Autumn and other Future Stars of Cycling raced in front of 6,000 spectators at the Manchester Velodrome in October.

The September Award winner is Granagh/Ballingarry Camogie Club which won the Senior County Final and made it all the way to the Munster Senior Club Camogie Championship Final.

CLLSP Coordinator, Phelim Macken congratulated both monthly award winners. He added: “Autumn is being officially recognised for becoming the first Irish girl to be selected for the prestigious ‘Future Stars” series and in doing so acting as a positive role model for teenage girls. Meanwhile, members of the Granagh/Ballingarry Camogie Club have shown tremendous determination and no shortage of skill in overcoming Ahane to win the County Championship. Their achievement is all the more impressive considering the team were missing 8 players from last year’s Championship side through retirement and emigration.”

Open to all 700 clubs in Limerick City and County, the winners of the monthly award are decided by a committee made up of LSP staff and Fleming Medical staff. At the end of the year the monthly winners will be invited to the County Limerick Local Sports Partnership (CLLSP) annual awards ceremony where the sporting performance of the year will win an AED (provided by Fleming Medical) worth €2400, an AED training evening for 8 people worth €600 and a perpetual trophy.

Previous winners of the Award include Rathkeale boxers and twin brothers Jamie and Jason Harty (August), Limerick Lakers U17 Boys Basketball Team (July), Leah Maunsell of Team Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Club (June), Limerick City Gymnastics Club (May), Richmond RFC (April) Catholic Institute Athletic Club Men’s seconds hockey team (March) and athlete Ed Valetka from Kilfinane (February).
