The Limerick Arts Office has announced details of the sixth annual Culture Night Limerick initiative, a series of late night cultural events that will take place at various locations throughout the city and county this Friday (September 20th).
Culture Night is a Temple Bar Cultural Trust initiative in partnership with the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Limerick Arts Office and local authorities throughout the island of Ireland. Last year, more than 300,000 people engaged with Culture Night and even more are expected to join in the cultural celebration this year.
The Culture Night Limerick 2013 programme celebrates Limerick’s rich arts and cultural life with 50 separate events for all the family being held over a 5 hour period from 5pm to 10pm.
Scheduled events include the launch of Music Generation Limerick City (6pm-8pm) during which various city venues will showcase the work of Music Generation with musicians, choirs and ensembles. Initiated by Music Network and funded by U2 and The Ireland Funds, Music Generation aims to help children and young people to access music education in their own locality.
New events this year include the Red Viking Culture Night Bus Tour, the New Guild of Domestic Cooks Workshop hosted by Occupy Space, the refurbished Heritage Centre at Lough Gur, and the film launch of ’20 Weeks of Change’ from Limerick Smarter Travel. Events for children and families include Children’s Art Workshops at Limerick City Gallery of Art, Kids' Arts and Crafts at The Hunt Museum, Jewellery Making Workshop for Children at Contact Studios and Clay Bell Decorations Workshop at St Mary's Cathedral.
“Towers, castles museums, galleries, theatres, heritage centres, artist studios and other venues throughout the city and county will host a wide and varied array of cultural events for members of the public to engage with and enjoy,” explained Sheila Deegan, Limerick Arts Office.
Ms. Deegan added: “Limerick has a great number of events to offer on Culture Night 2013, which is an imaginative way for people of all ages and from all backgrounds to access and enjoy the rich cultural offering of Limerick’s arts, heritage and cultural venues. In 2014, Limerick will hold the first Irish designation as National City of Culture in recognition that culture has the power to change and act as a catalyst to bring the City together so that the sum of its parts will be greater than the whole.”
“We are asking people to start the momentum for City of Culture 2014 by coming out and supporting Culture Night Limerick 2013 this Friday,” she concluded.
Culture Night will feature a number of events celebrating Limerick’s thriving arts, heritage and crafts sector. 'Bellwether' Exhibition Limerick School of Art and Design Gallery will present works by artists from Wickham Street Studios, curated by Aoibheann McCarthy. The Hunt Museum, in conjunction with the Arts Council, will present a major exhibition of English artist and sculptor Henry Moore (Tours at 5.30pm, 7pm & 8.30pm). 'A Candle In the Window' exhibition will be launched at the Red Door Gallery, Newcastle West, at 8pm followed by 'A Candlelit Interlude' with Hank & Edel, The Shamrock Bar, South Quay, Newcastle West (9.30pm onward). On Friday evening, members of the public are also invited to speak to artists in their studios at Faber Studios, ARC and Contact Studios.
Theatre will also feature prominently this Friday evening. Limerick Youth Theatre presents RAW, featuring work directed and performed by: Limerick Youth Theatre, Fresh Film Festival and Limerick Rockers Cru. The event takes place Limerick Youth Theatre Studio, The Basement, 73 O’Connell Street from 6pm-9pm. Orchard Theatre will present ‘Swan Song’ by Anton Chekhov, performed by David Collins and Stefan Barry (6:30pm & 7:15pm, Limerick City Library, The Granary).
Music, song and dance features prominently in the programme of events for Culture Night Limerick 2013. The Lola Montez Cabaret – the musical and dramatic telling of the story of Limerick's most notorious daughter - returns for a one night only gala performance to celebrate the launch of Music Generation Limerick City at the Lime Tree Theatre. Music Generation is Ireland’s new National Music Education Programme. Meanwhile, there will be live opera performances throughout the evening at The Hunt Museum in association with the University Concert Hall (6pm-6.45pm, 7.30pm-8.15pm, and 9pm-9.45pm). Conradh na Gaeilge will once again hold their popular Oíche Chultúir sa Chistin, an informal night of Irish tradition, with music, song, dance and of course a cupán tae! Patterns Dance Performance, The Hunt Museum, Rutland Street, Limerick 5.30pm. Enjoy contemporary dance pieces performed by talented artists with intellectual disabilities.
The theme of multiculturalism and world music also will be celebrated during Culture Night. As part of the 7th Annual Polish Art Festival in Limerick, members of the Luterick Theatre from Bristol will be taking part in a live street performance show (The Hunt Museum). Jazz and funk band 'Tongue bundle' will perform at Limerick City Gallery of Art.
Meanwhile, storytelling, poertry readings and writing workshops will also feature on Friday evening. Limerick Writers Centre will be running two memoir writing workshops in association with The Frank McCourt Museum, 6pm to 7.30pm and 7.30pm to 9.00pm at the Museum. The University of Limerick will host the launch of ‘Forty Tall Tales’, a collection of faerie tales and wonder stories written by children from Limerick Schools and members of the University community. These 40 stories are illustrated by Damaris Smyth and arise from a storytelling event held with local storyteller Greg O’Shaughnessy. To celebrate Culture Night 2013, the newly refurbished Heritage Centre at Lough Gur invites the public to a one-off concert (7.30-10pm) featuring a number of local storytellers, musicians and poets who will perform many legendary pieces to entertain all. Limerick Printmakers will host printmaking workshops, with a wide range of activities for all ages. The Frank McCourt Museum will be giving guided tours of the museum, and local actors will read from Frank McCourt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir, ‘Angela’s Ashes.’ ‘They’ve Not Gone Away You Know’ is an event focusing on classic poems taught in schools. A number of writers from The Limerick Writers’ Centre will recite their favourite classic poems outside the Quay Books stand in Arthur's Quay Shopping Centre from 7.30pm – 8.30pm.
Heritage and history also will feature prominently during Culture Night. There will be a 5-minute Walking Tour of Medieval Englishtown, leaving from the Bishop's Palace at 6pm. Limerick City Gallery of Art will host the ‘Labour & Lockout Exhibition’ focusing on the 100th anniversary of the Great Lockout of 1913. Members of the public are invited to browse the history of Limerick City and its surroundings at Limerick City Museum & Archives at Istabraq Hall. The public is also being invited to hop on The Red Viking Culture Night Bus Tour and travel through a city steeped in history dating back to the arrival of the early Viking settlers. Pick-up from Liddy Street (beside Tourist Office) & Bank Place, 5pm-8pm. Meanwhile, the public can ‘Walk the Walls of Limerick’ with guide Dr Dan Tietzsch-Tyler. The 2-hour walk will take in 13 stretches of the medieval city walls (Starts at 5pm, meet at the entrance to St John’s Hospital). Meanwhile, Culture House at No.2 Pery Square - the new home of Limerick’s 2014 City of Culture Team - will be open to visitors for Culture Night and short talks on the history of the house will take place.
Other events scheduled to take place include Limerick Smarter Travel’s '20 Weeks of Change' exhibition (6a Rutland Street, 5-10pm) and the launch of a film (8pm) documenting the experiences of thirty Limerick locals as they incorporate walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing into their daily routine for 20 weeks. The New Guild of Domestic Cooks Workshop, hosted by Occupy Space and artist facilitator Natalie Woociker, will take place at 9 Lower Cecil Street from 6pm-8pm. An event entitled PRISM takes place at Ormston House, 9-10 Patrick Street, from 6pm-10pm and will feature the launch of the Graduate Award Exhibition by Argentinean artist Gimena Blanco and a dance performance by Austrian-born Isabella Oberländer (8pm). Elsewhere, members of the public are invited to St Mary's Cathedral on Bridge Street to visit the tower and see the bells in action from 6pm-9.30pm. People will be invited to try their hand at learning to ring on the magnificent set of 'mini-bells’.
