Limerick families get into gear for Bike Week 2013

A challenge is going out to all Limerick families to dust off their bikes and trikes for a bumper week of cycling activity during Bike Week 2013.

Supported by Limerick Sports Partnerships and Limerick Smarter Travel, the annual initiative begins next week and features a range of events for all ages. The highlight of the weeklong programme will be a charity event during which members of the public will be able to cycle alongside three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond.

LeMond will get Bike Week 2013 underway on Friday 14th June in the Lime Tree Theatre at Mary Immaculate College when he participates in a questions and answers session on his career with cycling correspondent with The Irish Times, Shane Stokes. Tickets for this fundraiser in aid of the Get BACk Charity are €15 and further information is available on www.limetreetheatre.ie.

This year’s Get BACk Challenge will be held on Saturday 15th June in Kilkee where hundreds of cyclist will be heading to the Loop Head Peninsula coastline for a cycle led by LeMond. The challenge will offer participants a choice of a 60km or a 120km routes alongside a 10km walk / fun run route for those who prefer to stay on two feet.

Meanwhile, the 2013 Family Day Cycle will take place at UL Boathouse on Sunday 16th June 11am and will feature a 5-8km cycle, a mountain bike challenge and Sprocket Rocket Activities. On Sunday June 23rd, all Grandparents and Grandchildren are invited to participate in a 3k and 5k cycle around the Park of the Demesne in Newcastle West from 11am to 1pm.

“Bike Week’s main focus is to encourage family members to take up cycling as a regular activity in their local community,” explained Elaine O’Connor, Coordinator of the Limerick City Sports Partnership. Ms. O’Connor continued: “National Bike Week was launched in 2009 to raise the profile of cycling as a healthy and fun mode of transport and physical activity. Limerick Sports Partnerships are delighted to be involved once again and look forward to the people of Limerick turning up in large numbers to demonstrate or rediscover their love of cycling.”

Commenting on the fundraising element of Bike Week, Ms. O’Connor stated: “The Limerick-based Get BACk Challenge is a registered charity that raises funds to support a broad range of health and activity initiatives aimed particularly at socially disadvantaged children. The central idea is that encouraging activity among kids and adopting a healthy lifestyle will reduce their risk of contracting life threatening illnesses later in life and that they will carry through a healthy focus with them in life. Since the start of the Get BACk charity in 2006 over 10,000 Limerick children have benefitted from programmes operated through the Limerick Sports Partnerships.”
