Richmond's remarkable haul of three major trophies in one season was recognised by the Limerick Sports Partnerships today when the club was named winner of the Performance in Sport Award for April.
In recent weeks, the Limerick club has won the Webb Cup, Tony O’Flynn Memorial Cup (Munster Junior Two Cup) and North Munster Gleeson League, resulting in the club’s return to senior rugby. Richmond will join established clubs such as Instonians, Skerries, Ards, Suttonians and Tullamore in the All-Ireland League (AIL) 2B next season.
Sponsored by Limerick-based first aid and medical device specialists Fleming Medical in conjunction with Limerick Sports Partnerships, the Performance in Sport Award was launched earlier this year to recognise the valuable contribution made by sporting clubs and organisations to community life throughout Limerick. Previous winners of the Award include Catholic Institute Athletic Club Men’s seconds hockey team (March) and Scoil Pol Secondary school student Ed Valetka from Kilfinane (February).
Richmond were represented at the awards presentation by Irene Flanagan (Secretary), Natalie McNamara (PRO) and (Muriel Waters) who accepted a First Aid Kit and a €500 AED Defibrillator voucher on behalf of the club.
CLLSP Coordinator, Phelim Macken congratulated Richmond on their recent successes. “When considering potential candidates in this award scheme, we look for a club, sporting organisation or individual that has achieved success as well as contributed to local community life. Along with achieving considerable success during the 2012-13 season, Richmond FC has remained a community club to its core and is a central part of Limerick’s rich rugby history. All of these factors make Richmond a thoroughly deserving winner of the April monthly award,” stated Mr. Macken.
Open to all 700 clubs in Limerick City and County, the winners of the monthly award are decided by a committee made up of LSP staff and Fleming Medical staff. At the end of the year the monthly winners will be invited to the County Limerick Local Sports Partnership (CLLSP) annual awards ceremony where the sporting performance of the year will win an AED (provided by Fleming Medical) worth €2400, an AED training evening for 8 people worth €600 and a perpetual trophy.
