Household Charge reminder for residential property owners in Clare

Homeowners in County Clare who have not yet registered their property for the Household Charge are being reminded that the charge can be paid up to 30 June, 2013.

As of May 1st, a total of 36,400 residential property owners in Clare have registered their property for the Household Charge, equating to a compliance rate of 79.5% compared to the national compliance rate of 74% (1,198,091 households).

The Household Charge applies to 2012 only. From 1 July 2013 it will be replaced by the Local Property Tax, to be administered and collected by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners.

Ms. Jackie Maguire, Chair of the Household Charge Project Board commented: “We thank all those residential property owners who have registered for and paid the Household Charge in respect of 2012; your Charge is going directly to fund local services such as street lighting and cleaning, playgrounds, parks and playing pitches, public libraries, swimming pools and many other vital local services that benefit all in our communities.”

Residential property owners should be aware that they will be required to demonstrate compliance with the Household Charge legislation when selling a property; non-compliance will complicate the conveyancing process.

Outstanding Household Charge liabilities can still be discharged by going online to www.householdcharge.ie, through your local authority office or by post.  The following charges (including late payment penalties and interest) apply for payments received up to the end of June 2013: €144 to 31st May 2013 and €145 to 30th June 2013.

Under the legislation providing for the Local Property Tax, any outstanding Household Charge liabilities (or parts thereof) on 1 July, 2013 will become a charge of €200 to Local Property Tax which will fall to be collected by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners and which will be subject to Office of the Revenue Commissioners collection and enforcement measures. The local government system will not be processing household charge payments after 30 June 2013.

Residential property owners can register for and pay the Household Charge up to and including the 30th of June 2013 online by credit/debit card at www.householdcharge.ie, by cheque/Postal Order/Bank Drafts at a local authority office, or by posting forms to Household Charge, PO Box 12168, Dublin 1.
