A Dublin writer has won the inaugural Doolin Short Story Competition 2013.
Hosted by the Irish Writers' Centre and Hotel Doolin as part of the Doolin Writer’s Weekend, the competition featured a prize fund of €1,000 for the winning entrant, with €600 and €400 prizes for the second and third placed entries respectively. Philomena Young from Foxrock claimed the top prize for her short story ‘Exile’. ‘Pete’ by Valerie Sirr finished second while ‘Counting Down’ by Lisa Harding claimed the third prize.
The competition winners were selected from more than 260 entries and were judged by acclaimed Irish playwright and novelist John MacKenna, winner of the Irish Times Fiction Award; the Cecil Day Lewis Literary Award; and the Hennessy New Irish Writing Award.
Last weekend’s Doolin Writers Weekend featured workshops, lectures and readings by leading names from Ireland’s arts and literary scene, intermixed with live traditional Irish music sessions in the North Clare village. Contributors included playwright and director Peter Sheridan, novelist and short story writer Mike McCormack, Irish punk music pioneer Terri Hooley, and musician Steve Wall of The Walls and The Stunning.
According to event organiser Donal Minihane of Hotel Doolin: “North Clare and Doolin in particular, have long been associated with some of Ireland’s most famous writers and this was reflected in the significant public interest generated by the Doolin Writer’s Weekend. Following on from the success of the inaugural Weekend, we are delighted to announce that plans are already underway to host the event again in 2014
The Doolin Writer’s Weekend kicked off a summer of festivals being hosted by Hotel Doolin. The Doolin Folk Festival takes place from June 14-16 2013 and the second annual Doolin Craft Beer Festival August will be held from 23-25 August. Collectively, the festivals are expected to draw more than 5,000 people to the North Clare village.
