Shannon Senator Tony Mulcahy says Ryanair’s announcement of additional services from Shannon Airport is a further indication of the return to growth at the airport.
The airline says the new Alicante (Spain) service starts on 5th June and will operate twice weekly.
Senator Mulcahy said: “The short period since autonomy was granted to Shannon Airport has seen some very significant, positive developments at the airport. This announcement comes on foot of a series of other service additions at Shannon including Ryanair’s decision to add extra flights to both its Palma and Malaga services during the peak summer months, Aer Lingus’ new service to Faro (Portugal), Flybe’s new service to Glasgow (Scotland) and a doubling of existing services to Bodrum (Turkey). Of course, these developments come on top of new services this summer to Philadelphia, Chicago and Glasgow.”
The Fine Gael Senator added that he is optimistic about Ryanair announcing further services from the airport in the coming months.
He continued: “The separation of Shannon Airport from the Dublin Airport Authority has given airport management the freedom to devise a strategy to grow the level of services being provided. Already, Ryanair flies to Alicante, Malaga, Palma, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Nantes, Wroclaw, London Stansted, London Gatwick and Liverpool. I am confident that the airline will continue discussions with airport management with a view to announcing additional services in the near future.
“In the meantime, I would call on the people of the West of Ireland to support Shannon Airport when considering a trip abroad. It is only through the support of those living in the wider region that these new services can remain economically viable. We, as a region, cannot afford to be complacent about the services on offer at Shannon as seen with the loss of other services down through the years. By supporting existing services, the people of the Mid-West can play as much a part in protecting Shannon Airport’s future as management and airlines.”
