The Mayor of Clare has called on members of the public to support Clare Daffodil Day 2013 by buying a daffodil on March 22, holding a daffodil coffee morning or selling daffodils in the community or workplace.
Councillor Pat Daly issued the appeal while participating in the launch of the annual Daffodil Day campaign by the Clare Branch of the Irish Cancer Society at the West County Hotel, Ennis last evening.
Daffodil Day is organised and run by the Irish Cancer Society and is regarded as the most popular annual charity event in Ireland.
Speaking last evening in Ennis, Mayor Daly stated: “Cancer affects us all at some point in our lives. All of us know someone who has cancer or who has survived it, or who became a victim. This is reason enough for all of us to support worthy causes such as Daffodil Day. Fundraising efforts like this help to raise awareness as well as fund vital services.”
He added: “While cancer services throughout Ireland continue to improve, the prevention and reduction of incidence of this disease has become a priority. I would like to the congratulate everyone associated with the Clare Branch of the Irish Cancer Society for their ongoing efforts to help cancer research and palliative care.”
Mayor Daly also reminded people about the free and confidential advice that is available from the Irish Cancer Society
He said, “The Cancer Information Service provides some of the latest advice and support on cancer, and free information that can really help someone who is in the dark and feeling frightened. The service is available on Freefone 1800 200 700, or by email at helpline@irishcancer.ie.”
