Over 40 representatives of the local community and business sector in Kilrush this week attended a public consultation event on the preparation of a Draft Development Plan aimed at guiding the future development of the West Clare town and surrounding areas.
The roundtable discussion took place as part of the public consultation process for the preparation of the Draft Kilrush Town and Environs Development Plan 2014 – 2020. The public consultation on the Draft Plan concludes on Tuesday 12th March, which is the deadline for receipt of written submissions or observations.
The Draft Development Plan includes designs for improvements to the streetscape of Francis Street and Cappa Village, proposals for a playground and designs for the revitalisation of Place de Plouzane, and specific Chapters on Kilrush Town Centre, Retail Development and Tourism.
The Plan also features a chapter on Green Infrastructure linking the assets of Vandeleur Garden and the Marina via a River walk with an emphasis on cycling and walking, a specific chapter on Cappa and proposals to attract Atlantic Way tourism, and high quality mapping and aerial photo graphs. For the first time meanwhile, key opportunity sites in the town have been identified with specific development proposals
Commenting on the Tuesday night’s roundtable event, Mayor of Kilrush Cllr. Mairead O’Brien stated: “I am delighted with the attendance and level of engagement that the people of Kilrush and Cappa made on the evening. They were positive and welcomed the content and vision of the Draft Plan and put forward a number of insightful comments and suggestions about the preparation of the Draft Plan and the future development of the town.”
Mr. Brian McCarthy, Senior Executive Planner, Clare Local Authorities, added: “Comments reflected the pride the community of Kilrush have in their town, its people and its natural environment and amenities on the Shannon Estuary and their desire to ensure Kilrush achieves its full potential as place to live, work, recreate and do business in.”
He continued: “Participants welcomed the proposals in the Draft Plan for the promotion of the River Walk linking Vandeleur Gardens with the town and Marina area and proposals for the upgrade of Place de Plouzane and Francis Street. The community also were anxious to maximise the town’s role as a tourist destination and enhance its tourist product building on the natural beauty of the Heritage Town and Scattery Island.”
Mr. McCarthy outlined that all written submissions and observations made to the Planning Authority in relation to the Draft Plan will be taken into consideration before the finalising of the Plan. “It is important that people have their say on the Draft Development Plan and make submissions to us no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday 12th March, 2013,” he concluded.
