The Irish Association of Barbershop Singers (I.A.B.S) will host its annual Weekend Bootcamp in Ennis, Co Clare, this weekend (2-3 February, 2013).
The coaching workshops for choral groups (Saturday) and quartets (Sunday) will include a Gala Performance by some of the UK and Ireland’s most esteemed Barbershop groups at the Danlann Theatre, Coláiste Muire, Ennis, at 8pm on Saturday.
The Bootcamp and concert are a precursor to the 2014 International Barbershop Singers Convention, which will be held in Ennis in October of next year. The event has been held in Galway, Dublin and Limerick in previous years, and is expected to attract more than 600 participants from Ireland and abroad to the Clare County Capital.
According to Michael Mac Giolla Ri of I.A.B.S.: “Barbershop groups are popping up in every corner of Ireland and the aim of the upcoming workshops is to encourage local people in Clare and surrounding counties to try the experience of close harmony singing. Barbershop songs include modern pop and folk music arranged in the barbershop style of a cappella close harmony style. We also invite members of the public to attend the Saturday night’s Gala Performance, which for many very well may be the first time they have heard Barbershop Singing in a live environment. The evening features a great line up of barbershop singers from around Ireland and Britain,” he added.
The concert will feature five national Barbershop Singers choruses averaging 25 to 30 singers each, seven national Barbershop Singers quartets, two acts by pupils of Coláiste Muire led by the schools music teacher Michael Hennessey, and a guest appearance from U.K. quartet called I.Q who are the U.K. British Association of Barbershop Singers 2012 Gold Medalists.
Mr. Mac Giolla Ri concluded by acknowledging the support of the Shannon Region Conference & Sports Bureau for its support and for promoting Barbershop Singing in the Shannon Region.
The (I.A.B.S) workshops are open to non members by advance booking as is the concert (entrance fee €5.00) which takes place at the Danlann Theatre in Colaiste Muire, Ennis, on Saturday 2 February and Sunday 3 February, 2013.
