As many as 4 out of 5 child car
seats in County Clare may not be correctly fitted according to research
conducted by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).
The RSA, supported by Clare County Council, will hold a ‘Check It Fits’ Roadshow in Ennis this weekend for Clare parents, guardians and grandparents who may be unsure as to whether their child’s car seat is fitted correctly or indeed if they are using the correct one.
The free event will be held on the grounds of Lidl supermarket on the Gort Road on Sunday (December 9th) from 12 noon to 6pm.
According to Clare Road Safety Officer, Barry Keating: “Sadly, research conducted at previous roadshows has revealed that 3 out of 4 parents are not fitting their child’s car seat which could lead to serious or fatal injury in the event of a crash. We understand that many parents, particularly new parents, are unsure as to what car seat is right for their child and they often don’t get information from retailers as to how to fit it correctly. The aim of the roadshow is to help parents to learn how to fit their child’s car seat so that they can be reassured that their child is travelling safely.”
Mr. Keating said that Sunday’s public information event will feature a drive-through marquee enabling people to turn up in their car with their child car seat.
He added: “The checks only take a few minutes and an expert will personally check every child car seat to ensure it is fitted correctly, or if not, demonstrate how to fit it correctly or provide advice on whether a different car seat is required. Over the past seven years, thousands of child car seats have been checked by the RSA’s experts, giving thousands of parents the peace of mind that their child is travelling safely in the car.”
“This free service could save a life, so I would urge Clare parents, guardians and grandparents to please take the time to visit Lidl this Sunday if possible,” Mr. Keating concluded.
