Limerick County Council today hosted a Civic Welcome for a charity cyclist who has completed a 1,600-kilometre cycle from Birmingham to Limerick in aid of Pieta House Mid-West in Limerick.
Cathaoirleach Cllr. Jerome Scanlan welcomed Birmingham-native Paul Ensell to Limerick County Hall in Dooradoyle as the 23-year-old successfully completed his mammoth fundraising effort.
Paul’s cycle took him from Birmingham to Shrewsbury, Aberystwyth and on to Holyhead. Paul cycled across the country from Dublin to Achill before travelling on to Galway, Offaly, Wexford, Waterford and Cork. He cycled the final leg of his journey from Cork to Limerick this morning.
Paul, whose mother hails from Cross in West Clare, documented his journey on his Facebook account, The Rocky Road to Limerick. Donations received during the Irish leg of the journey will go to Pieta House Mid-West, the Limerick-based charity tackling self-harm, depression and suicide. Funds raised during the UK leg of the cycle will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of Paul’s cousin Kevin Costello, who died of leukaemia aged 15 in 1977
According to Cllr. Scanlan: “I want to congratulate Paul for his selfless act to raise awareness of and fundraise for Pieta House in Limerick. It is through fundraising activities like this that the free support service provided by Pieta House is maintained.”
Speaking about his decision to undertake the charity cycle, Paul said: “Young people get a bad press, and you don’t find many young people doing anything like this for charity. I was trying to show that we do still care and there are a lot of people out there who will work hard for others.”
