“Flying the Banner – Short stories from Clare’s teenage writers” will be launched in De Valera Library, Ennis, on Friday, 26th October.
33 teenage writers, ranging in age from 12 to 17 and coming from seven different schools across the Banner County, will see their professionally edited stories published by one of the country’s leading publishers of young people’s material.
Ballyvaughan-based publisher, MÓINÍN, has joined forces with Clare County Library and Clare Arts Office in a three-year collaborative effort which sees its culmination in this publication.
‘Flying the Banner’ is the result of a six-week training course in short story writing given to these young writers by accomplished short story writer Ré Ó Laighléis. Three groups of teenage writers participated in the course at different library locations throughout County Clare, one each in the respective years 2009, 2010 and 2011.
According to Ré Ó Laighléis: “The contributors to this publication are ambassadors for their county and their generation. These young writers also reflect the extraordinary ability and creativity that abounds in County Clare.”
“There is little of life that is not touched upon within the covers of this collection, and the writers’ treatment of their subject bears a profundity, a sense of the contemporary and a universality that give the stories relevance and poignancy far beyond the boundaries of county and country. That they both challenge and give pleasure at one and the same time is a measure of the potency of these stories,” he added.
