Limerick Women's Mini Marathon Is Launched

The 2012 Limerick Women's Mini Marathon was officially launched by Cllr Jerome Scanlan, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, at County Hall in Dooradoyle last evening (Monday, 10 September 2012).

The marathon, which takes place at midday on Sunday 14th October, has continued to grow from the original entry of just a few hundred in the late 1990’s to more than 3,000 last year, under the direction of Limerick Athletic Club.

Now an established race on the athletics calendar, the race is open to women from 15 years old upwards and all fitness levels, from wheel chair athletes, walkers and joggers to elite athletes. The race is 8km and starts & finishes on the grounds of the University of Limerick.

The event is being sponsored this year by The Limerick Leader, Limerick’s Live 95 FM, The Limerick Post, and VHI Healthcare.

Speaking in County Hall last evening, Councillor Scanlan said: “Along with events such as the Great Limerick Run, the Mini-Marathon has not only raised much needed funds for countless charities but it also has contributed immeasurably to the local economy. Participants, their friends and often their extended family travel from all over the country to take part in the marathon. This comes as a welcome boost to the local hospitality sector, in particular.”

“Limerick always has had a proud sporting tradition and annual events such as this help to consolidate the City and County’s reputation, both regionally and nationally. That is why these events must be supported by everyone who has an interest in promoting Limerick,” the Cathaoirleach added.
