Up To 2,500 Attend Clare Heritage Week Events

Between 2,000 and 2,500 people participated in more than 50 Heritage Week events throughout County Clare last week.

Clare County Council coordinated Clare Heritage Week 2012 in conjunction with The Heritage Council, with support from Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht. Heritage Week also is part of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union.

Heritage Week 2012 featured a series of events focusing on Clare’s heritage through the numerous guided walks and lectures that took place in venues around the County, including at local museums and libraries. Heritage Week also featured the launch of the Ennis Atlas the “Spirit of Lough Derg” series, and the launch of an initiative aimed at reintroducing the Ballyvaughan Apple Tree to the north Clare coastal village.

The local authority’s Heritage Officer described this year’s events as the best attended in the 10 years that Heritage Week has been held in County Clare.

Congella McGuire attributed the attendance figures to a rise in public interest in heritage tourism, as well as the wide range and quality of events held throughout the County this year.

“There has been a huge increase in the number of people opting to holiday at home in recent years. Coupled with this, there has been a notable surge in public interest in Irish heritage, including heritage attractions. This was reflected during Heritage Week in Clare during which between 2,000 and 2,500 people attended over 50 events in every corner of the County,” she explained.

Ms. McGuire added: “A huge amount of work was carried out by individuals, communities and heritage attraction operators throughout the County in delivering this year’s programme of events. The work that was put in has been recognised by the public as evidenced by the huge numbers that came out to participate in Heritage Week.”
