The Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council this week congratulated to Salesian Secondary College in Pallaskenry which was one of the principal winners in the Junior Achievement-Young Enterprise (JA-YE) Europe competition.
Five students of the Limerick College and their unique device, Sign4Life, beat off stiff opposition from teams from 32 countries to scoop Junior Achievement European Company of the Year 2012, a Europe wide competition run by Junior Achievement, Ireland and Europe's leading organisation bringing enterprise education into schools. The team arrived back to celebrations last week following the presentation of the Award in Bucharest, Romania.
Commenting on the award win, Councillor Jerome Scanlan stated: “I would like to pay tribute to management and staff of Salesian Secondary College for fostering an entrepreneurial spirit in their students. Ireland will need entrepreneurs and innovative thinking if it is to prosper in years to come. This award win showcases the depth of talent that exists among our young people and this should be supported and nurtured where and when possible.”
The winning device, Sign4Life teaches sign language through a smartphone application and is designed to bridge the gap between hearing and deaf communities. It uses video technology through the smartphone to reach users of Irish sign language in everyday categories such as food, numbers, sport, calendar, colours and family. The template can be adapted to any international language.
