The Limerick County Arts Office has announced details of the inuagural Limerick County Culture Night 2012, a series of late night cultural events that will take place at various locations throughout the County on Friday September 21st.
Culture Night is a Temple Bar Cultural Trust initiative in partnership with the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Limerick County Council Arts Office and local authorities throughout the island of Ireland. Last year, more than 300,000 people engaged with Culture Night and even more are expected to join in the cultural celebration this year.
Locally, the county’s arts and cultural organisations will open their doors until late on September 21st with 20 free events, tours, talks and performances for members of the public of all ages to enjoy.
Highlights from this year’s programme include art exhibitions, traditional Irish music and dance sessions, walking tours and arts and crafts workshops at various locations such as Foynes, Newcastle West, Templeglantine, Castleconnell, Kilmallock, Lough Gur and Kilmallock, Knockainey, Mungret, Rathkeale and Askeaton.
“As an initiative, Culture Night has rapidly expanded since it was first launched seven years ago. For example, new regions to the programme this year are Limerick County, Ards (Co. Down), Armagh, Galway County, Hollywood (Co. Wicklow), Louth and North Tipperary,” explained Joan MacKernan, Limerick County Arts Officer.
Ms. MacKernan added: “Limerick County Arts Office is delighted to be able to work with local museums, galleries, theatres, community groups, artists’ studios and cultural institutions to host a large number of free events this year. A range of special events will take place across indoor and outdoor venues on the night ensuring Culture Night is open to as diverse an audience range as possible, making it an inclusive cultural experience for all citizens.”
Music, song and dance features prominently in the programme of events for Limerick County Culture Night 2012. An evening of Celtic Music & Poetry will be held in Lough Gur Heritage Centre from 7.30 to 9.00 p.m. The evening will be hosted by harpist Aine Humphries from Meanus, who will be joined by local poet and writer John Carew and Grange music group Jade Dillon and Noreen O’Sullivan. Elsewhere, Castleconnell Folk Group will host a night of music, song, story, and rhythm and rhyme from 9.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. at Herberts Bar in Lisnagry, musical group Tuxedo Jazz present ‘Soul-Soothing Sounds’ at Cleary’s Bar in Newcastle West at 9:30 p.m, while Adare Heritage Centre hosts a Ceíli from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Members of the public are invited to participate in “Evergreen’s Rambling House”, an evening of storytelling and song, at the A.C.M. Community Centre in Castleconnell from 8.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. Finally, St. John’s Church in Knockainey will be the venue at 8 p.m. for an evening of song, music and dance performed by Ceoltoiri Óga Luimnigh, a youth group comprising of musicians, singers and dancers from the Limerick area ranging in age from 12-18 years.
The theme of multiculturalism and world music also will be celebrated during Culture Night. African drumming teacher Eithne Hehir presents a Drumming Workshop at The Red Door in Newcastle West from 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Meanwhile, the County Limerick Youth Choir and County Limericks women’s community choir, Allundé will present “Songs from Around the World” host an evening of song at Foynes Yacht Club from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The County Limerick Youth Choir, led by Máire Keary Scanlon, has recently returned from performing the Oulu Irish Festival in Finland.
Culture Night will feature a number of events celebrating County limerick thriving arts and crafts sector. Local artist Ann Byrne, who graduated from the Limerick School of Art and Design in June, will present her first Painting Exhibition at Limerick County Library in Newcastle West at 8 p.m. Potter John Sherlock will present “Open Studio Potter at Work” when he opens his workshop at Sugarhill, Templeglantine, to the public from midday to 5 p.m. At the A.C.M. Community Centre in Castleconnell from 3.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m., children and parents are invited to join Local Artists Toni Breen, Clare Hartigan & Michelle Yanez to make ‘Doing Drawings’, a fun learning session on how to confidently draw people in different poses. Elsewhere, Rathkeale Community Arts Group will host an exhibition of visual art drawn from the Art collection of Limerick County Council at Rathkeale Arts Centre from 6 p.m. to 9 p.mm, while the Castletroy Shopping Centre will be the venue from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for an art exhibition of works by local artists finished with a life painting presentation (5 p.m.).
Meanwhile, storytelling and Limerick’s association with the film industry will feature on 21 September. Friars’ Gate Theatre in Kilmallock will host a variety evening celebrating and sharing the talent of local actors, dancers, writers and artists, featuring CallBack Theatre Company and Spoken Dance at 8 p.m. At the historic Inchirourke House in Askeaton at 5:45 p.m., acclaimed novelist and native Limerick man Kevin Barry will present fireside readings in the first night of ‘A Country House Writers Weekend’. The Ballyneety Culture Night, an evening of music, song, arts and crafts, takes place at The Court House from 7 p.m. The event also features a film shot locally by award winning director/producer Keith Bogue and Emma Teck’s film ‘Star Struck’, which was partly shot in the Grange area.
Heritage and history also will feature prominently during Culture Night. A guided tour of Medieval Kilmallock, to include the restored Town Wall, Kings Castle, Collegiate Church, Dominican Priory and Blossoms Gate takes place at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by musical entertainment from Rambling House eat Deebert House Hotel. Geraldine O’Sullivan will host a Spinning & Weaving Workshop at Dooradoyle Library from 1.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m., during which she will demonstrate the different methods of spinning and carding wool using spinning wheels and drop-spindles that have been used in Ireland throughout the ages. Meanwhile, Mungret Heritage will host a one hour walking tour of the historic village from 6pm.
