71 sports clubs and organisations throughout County Clare have applied for funding under the 2012 Sports Capital Programme, which closed for applications in June.
According to new figures obtained by Clare Senator Tony Mulcahy, a total of €5,286,330 in funding is being sought for local capital projects costing €6,434,163.
Senator Mulcahy said that 2,152 applications for funding totalling €224,309,559 had been received from around Ireland. He noted that the €30m being made available for new sports capital projects would make the process of assessing applications very difficult.
According to Senator Mulcahy: “While the Government is delighted to have secured funding of €30m for new sports capital projects, demand has outstripped supply with €7.50 sought for every €1 it can allocate. I have advised any Clare clubs or organisations that have contacted me that due to the popularity of the Sports Capital Programme, a large proportion of applicants will not be successful. Having said that, Clare had an excellent record of receiving funding through this programme before it was discontinued in 2008.”
He Fine Gael Senator continued: “Between 1998 and 2008, the Programme was the primary vehicle for promoting the development of sports and recreational facilities throughout Ireland. Locally, the scheme helped to transform the sporting landscape of Clare with improved facilities in virtually every village and town. The facilities funded range from new equipment for the smallest clubs to large sports and amenity facilities. Successful funding applicants have included Ennistymon Recreation & Leisure Centre, Tulla Soccer Club, Crusheen GAA Club, Killaloe/Ballina Tennis Club, Lisdoonvarna Fáilte, Kilmurry/Ibrickane GAA, Lissycasey GAA Club, Mullagh Sports Field and Scariff RFC.”
Commenting on the selection process, Senator Mulcahy said: “Officials from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport are processing all applications received. This process will take some time, due to the volume of applications and the detailed information contained in each one. As a result the list of successful applicants will not be announced before the late autumn or early winter 2012.”
